What makes a professor? The answer depends on where in the world you are. Winner of the CIHE Award for Significant Research on International Higher Education by the Association for the Study of Higher Education In the twenty-first century, universities worldwide have found themselves thrust into a great "brain race" as nations, both developed and developing, seek to enhance their place in the global knowledge economy. As the concept of the de-localized university—one that has radically expanded, perhaps even beyond national borders—grows, competing nations have begun reshaping aspects of their national systems to accommodate global standards and metrics. In Professorial Pathways, Martin J. Finkelstein and Glen A. Jones consider how academic careers vary in countries that are fundamentally different in their organization and dynamics. Building on 25 years of scholarship, the book confronts major questions: What can we learn from the experience of other nations as they seek to balance the seemingly contradictory imperatives of expanding access and ensuring global competitiveness? What are the implications of this rapidly changing policy environment for the health of the academic professions on which university teaching and scholarship depends? And how can we advance the comparative study of higher education and, in particular, of the academic profession? The volume brings together detailed case studies of the latest—and ever-changing—educational developments in ten countries across Europe (France, Germany, United Kingdom, Russia), Asia (China, India, Japan), North America (United States, Canada), and South America (Brazil). Essays written by respected scholars in the field identify the major structural features of national higher education systems and academic markets that directly shape academic work and careers. Professorial Pathways will be of interest to anyone who toils in the vineyards of comparative and international higher education. Contributors: Elizabeth Balbachevsky, Martin J. Finkelstein, N. Teaching By Heart written by Thomas J. DeLong and has been published by Harvard Business Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-01-14 with Education categories.

The best teachers are leaders, and the best leaders are teachers. Teaching by Heart summarizes the author's key insights gained from more than forty years of teaching and managing. It illustrates how teachers can both lift people up and let them down. It proposes that the best teachers are also leaders, and the best leaders are also teachers. In examining how to lead and teach, renowned Harvard Business School professor Thomas J. DeLong takes the reader inside his own head and heart. He notes that, as teachers, we often focus more on our inadequacies and missteps than on our strengths and unique talents. He explains why this is so by dissecting and analyzing his own experiences--using himself as a case study. The book's goal is to help readers learn about the intricacies of teaching and managing, and to impart lessons about how teachers can create a unique teaching atmosphere. To do this, the author analyzes the process of creating a curriculum, preparing for an eighty-minute class, managing the fifteen minutes before class begins, and evaluating the nature of the teaching experience after the session concludes. Along the way, he connects specific classroom behaviors with leadership issues--in organizations, in teams, and in personal relationships. He also asks--and answers--some provocative questions, such as: What happens on multiple levels when I teach or lead--with me, students, or professionals? What am I thinking and feeling as I process what students are thinking and feeling? How are my internal conversations affecting how I teach and lead? How do I manage my biases, including having "favorite" students? To what extent can I use teaching methods in the arena of management? Throughout Teaching by Heart, DeLong discusses why empathy and authenticity matter. When teachers embrace this mindset, students have the opportunity to have a unique learning experience. Teachers and managers will learn how to create moments of transformation for students. Whether you're a university professor, a student, a business leader, or just someone fascinated by teaching, this book will instruct, entertain, and--hopefully--inspire.

This story focuses on the challenges, rewards, and setbacks of an instructor and his students at pivotal points during a single term in a university, with flashbacks from a decade of learning, and from two decades of applying knowledge. Along the way, a complete study philosophy emerges. The story also contains a helpful discussion guide at the end of it for reading groups, so that they may discuss the ideas that are presented in the book. It is a lighthearted look at academic life, and on how education affects all of our lives. It starts with the instructor conducting a class and then moves on to his activities while preparing to review current material to get his students ready for their future careers. It carries through to his testing experiences and to his preparations for new courses. Every second chapter has flashbacks to those events from his past studies and work where special moments occurred that helped to mold his current character and teaching style. The story originally started out as an autobiography, based on notes from a university teaching career, with flashbacks to the author's own times as a student, and to his experiences while working. As the story developed it became more like a novel, with intrigue and some humorous sidelines. A decision was made to turn it into autobiographical fiction, where most of the story was based on facts that occurred over a lifetime, along with some artistic embellishments to connect the flow of scenes as they occur. Technical books written by the author include the following. "Life as a Professor" highlights the challenges that are encountered in teaching current business and technology methods in colleges and universities, along with recommendations for solutions that are needed now in classrooms. "E-Commerce Concepts" discusses strategies to use when a business wants to take advantage of e-commerce to increase their sales and international exposure. "MBA Strategic Analysis" discusses methods to use to assess business strengths so that opportunities for growth can be more effectively implemented. "Computerized Financial Systems" reviews database designs and processes that are needed for implementing functional financial systems.

Like many black school principals, Ulysses Byas, who served the Gainesville, Georgia, school system in the 1950s and 1960s, was reverently addressed by community members as "Professor." He kept copious notes and records throughout his career, documenting efforts to improve the education of blacks. Through conversations with Byas and access to his extensive archives on his principalship, Vanessa Siddle Walker finds that black principals were well positioned in the community to serve as conduits of ideas, knowledge, and tools to support black resistance to officially sanctioned regressive educational systems in the Jim Crow South. Walker explains that principals participated in local, regional, and national associations, comprising a black educational network through which power structures were formed and ideas were spread to schools across the South. The professor enabled local school empowerment and applied the collective wisdom of the network to pursue common school projects such as pressuring school superintendents for funding, structuring professional development for teachers, and generating local action that was informed by research in academic practice. The professor was uniquely positioned to learn about and deploy resources made available through these networks. Walker's record of the transfer of ideology from black organizations into a local setting illuminates the remembered activities of black schools throughout the South and recalls for a new generation the role of the professor in uplifting black communities.

Oswald Theodore Avery is little known outside of the scientific community. Yet, this extraordinary man, here brought vividly to life by a perceptive friend and sophisticated scientific colleague, was a monumental force in the development of medical research in the United States. Even among scientists, Avery is known chiefly as the senior author of a paper published in 1944 that identified DNA as the purveyor of genetic information. Two things make this highly personalized biography a landmark volume. First, its technical chapters clarify the philosophical concepts that lie behind today's understanding of the immunology of bacterial infection. Second, not a single existing textbook has ever described the laborious methods by which the men in Avery's laboratory discovered the genetic import of DNA.
