“Lesley Castle” is a novella by Jane Austen, unfinished at the time of her death. Presented as a series of letters, it follows the conversations and musings of Miss Margaret Lesley and Miss Charlotte Lutterell. As they discuss such subjects as adultery, elopement, divorce, and remarriage, it soon becomes clear that that they are shallow, trivial women, and easy targets for Jane Austen’s sharp wit and social satire. Penned when she was just 14 years old, this text includes all of Austen's original spelling quirks. Jane Austen (1775 – 1817) was an English author known primarily for her novels, which critique the 18th century English upper classes and contemporary novels of sensibility. Her use of irony coupled with biting social commentary and realism have led to her wide acclaim amongst scholars and critics, her work contributing to the transition to 19th-century literary realism. Other notable works by this author include: “Sense and Sensibility” (1811), “Pride and Prejudice” (1813), and “Mansfield Park” (1814). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this book now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.

This inspired novella, with its outrageous cast of superficial characters, brilliantly showcases Jane Austen's comic genius. Presented here with A History of England and Catharine. As Miss Margaret Lesley and Miss Charlotte Lutterell divulge their innermost secrets through a series of letters, each reveals where her true priorities lie--if a bridegroom is fatally wounded the night before his wedding, the first concern must inexorably be for the luxurious food that will be laid to waste. As one plot gives way to the next, and as the heroines exchange wisdom on adultery, elopement, divorce, and remarriage, they increasingly fall prey to the merciless and lambasting sword of Jane Austen's wit. Author of the masterpieces Pride and Prejudice and Emma, Jane Austen is one of the world's best-loved novelists.

"Lesley Castle" is an early work by the British writer Jane Austen, written in 1792. It is an epistolary novella which consists mainly of letters exchanged between the characters, a common literary format at the time. The story takes place in the small town of Lesley Castle and revolves around the social relationships, romances, gossip and characters' characters. The story is told primarily through the letters of Margaret Lesley, who writes to her friend, Miss Charlotte Lutterell. Margaret's letters describe the intrigues and events that take place at Lesley Castle, including the infatuations and disenchantments of the inhabitants. The text is both a satire of the social conventions of the time and a humorous exploration of human characters and behavior. Jane Austen already shows her talent for keen observation of social interactions and her subtle humor. Although "Lesley Castle" is not as well known as Jane Austen's major novels, it offers an interesting insight into her early literary works and her developing writing style.

Lesley Castle (Jane Austen)This is a parodic-humorous piece from Jane Austen's Juvenilia (like Frederic & Elfrida, Jack & Alice, or Love and Freindship). From the dates given to the letters, Lesley Castle was probably written in early 1792 (when she was 16). It contains some amusing bits, but may be slightly confusing overall, since Jane Austen introduces a number of separate sub-plots and supporting characters. For this reason, I wasn't motivated enough to scan in the whole thing, but only certain selected portions (cutting away a few of the sub-plots but retaining most of the funnier parts). My Brother has just left us. "Matilda (said he at parting) you and Margaret will I am certain take all the care of my dear little one, that she might have received from an indulgent, and affectionate and amiable Mother." Tears rolled down his cheeks as he spoke these words-the remembrance of her, who had so wantonly disgraced the Maternal character and so openly violated the conjugal Duties, prevented his adding anything farther he embraced his sweet Child and after saluting Matilda and Me hastily broke from us and seating himself in his Chaise, pursued the road to Aberdeen. Never was there a better young Man! Ah! how little did he deserve the misfortunes he has experienced in the Marriage state. So good a Husband to so bad a Wife! for you know my dear Charlotte that the Worthless Louisa left him, her Child and reputation a few weeks ago in company with Danvers and dishonour. Never was there a sweeter face, a finer form, or a less amiable Heart than Louisa owned! Her child already possesses the personal Charms of her unhappy Mother! May she inherit from her Father all his mental ones! Lesley is at present but five and twenty, and has already given himself up to melancholy and Despair what a difference between him and his Father! Sir George is 57 and still remains the Beau, the flighty stripling, the gay Lad, and sprightly Youngster, that his Son was really about five years back, and that HE has affected to appear ever since my remembrance. While our father is fluttering about the streets of London, gay, dissipated, and Thoughtless at the age of 57, Matilda and I continue secluded from Mankind in our old and Mouldering Castle, which is situated two miles from Perth on a bold projecting Rock, and commands an extensive veiw of the Town and its delightful Environs. But tho' retired from almost all the World, (for we visit no one but the M'Leods, The M'Kenzies, the M'Phersons, the M'Cartneys, the M'Donalds, The M'kinnons, the M'lellans, the M'kays, the Macbeths and the Macduffs) we are neither dull nor unhappy on the contrary there never were two more lively, more agreable or more witty girls, than we are not an hour in the Day hangs heavy on our Hands.

Love and FreindshipLove and Freindship is a juvenile story by Jane Austen, dated 1790. From the age of eleven until she was eighteen, Jane Austen wrote her tales in three notebooks. The notebooks still exist - one in the Bodleian Library; the other two in the British Museum. They include among others Love and Freindship, written when Jane was fourteen, and The History of England, when she was fifteen.Written in epistolary form, like her later unpublished novella, Lady Susan, Love and Freindship is thought to be one of the tales she wrote for the amusement of her family; it was dedicated to her cousin Eliza de Feuillide, "La Comtesse de Feuillide". The instalments, written as letters from the heroine Laura, to Marianne, the daughter of her friend Isabel, may have come about as nightly readings by the young Jane in the Austen home. Love and Freindship (the misspelling is one of many in the story) is clearly a parody of romantic novels Austen read as a child. This is clear even from the subtitle, "Deceived in Freindship and Betrayed in Love", which completely undercuts the title. In form, it resembles a fairy tale as much as anything else, featuring wild coincidences and turns of fortune, but Austen is determined to lampoon the conventions of romantic stories, right down to the utter failure of romantic fainting spells, which always turn out badly for the female characters.LESLEY CASTLEIn this story one can see the development of Austen's sharp wit and disdain for romantic sensibility, so characteristic of her later novels.Story: This unfinished tale is written in letters mostly between Margaret Lesley in Scotland and Charlotte Lutterell in England. Margaret and her older sister Matilda reside in dreary old Lesley Castle in Perthshire, Scotland caring for their brother's motherless young daughter, while their father Sir George has a merry time in London. When their extravagant father remarries he brings his pretty new wife and her quiet brother to visit and their lives will never be the same again. Meanwhile Charlotte is busy preparing tons of food for her sister Eloisa's wedding feast when her fiance has a bad fall and dies. Poor Charlotte is left to figure out what to do with all of the food and try to comfort her sister. Charlotte, Eloisa and their mother travel to Bristol down to improve their health and there they meet Mr. & Mrs. Marlowe and handsome Mr. Cleveland. The story ends abruptly with the possibility of traveling abroad to see Margaret's brother and his ex-wife who have both remarried.

Jane Austen (16 December 1775 - 18 July 1817) was an English novelist known primarily for her six major novels, which interpret, critique and comment upon the British landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Austen's plots often explore the dependence of women on marriage in the pursuit of favourable social standing and economic security. Her works critique the novels of sensibility of the second half of the 18th century and are part of the transition to 19th-century literary realism. Her use of biting irony, along with her realism and social commentary, have earned her acclaim among critics and scholars. With the publications of "Sense and Sensibility" (1811), "Pride and Prejudice" (1813), "Mansfield Park" (1814) and "Emma" (1816), she achieved success as a published writer. She wrote two additional novels, "Northanger Abbey" and "Persuasion", both published posthumously in 1818, and began another, eventually titled "Sanditon", but died before its completion. She also left behind three volumes of juvenile writings in manuscript and another unfinished novel, "The Watsons". Her six full-length novels have rarely been out of print, although they were published anonymously and brought her moderate success and little fame during her lifetime. A significant transition in her posthumous reputation occurred in 1833, when her novels were republished in Richard Bentley's Standard Novels series, illustrated by Ferdinand Pickering, and sold as a set. They gradually gained wider acclaim and popular readership. In 1869, fifty-two years after her death, her nephew's publication of "A Memoir of Jane Austen" introduced a compelling version of her writing career and supposedly uneventful life to an eager audience. Austen has inspired a large number of critical essays and literary anthologies. Her novels have inspired many films, from 1940's "Pride and Prejudice" to more recent productions like "Sense and Sensibility" (1995) and "Love & Friendship" (2016).

Jane Austen's Literary Manuscripts remains the definitive account of the novelist's surviving papers. These date from 1787 to 1817, from the first beginning to the veyr end of her writing career. Their evidence considerably deepens our understanding of the imaginative process that stands behind the composition of the great novels. In Sanditon, the last work, we see the promise of a further and startling development in her art. The influence of her childhood reading and home life is considered in the first chapter, and a further new chapter examines Sir Charles Grandison, a work newly attributed to Jane Austen by Brian Southam in 1977. In an appendix, Southam discusses Mrs Leavis's theory concerning the relationship between Jane Austen's life and art, and between the juvenilia and the later novels.
