Since its immediate success in 1813, Pride and Prejudice has remained one of the most popular novels in the English language. Jane Austen called this brilliant work her own darling child and its vivacious heroine, Elizabeth Bennet, as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print. The romantic clash between the opinionated Elizabeth and her proud beau, Mr. Darcy, is a splendid performance of civilized sparring. And Jane Austens radiant wit sparkles as her characters dance a delicate quadrille of flirtation and intrigue, making this book the most superb comedy of manners of Regency England.Among the writers who have approached nearest to the manner of the great master, we have no hesitation in placing Jane Austen. Thomas MacaulayPride and Prejudice is the best novel in the language. Anthony TrollopeI used to think that men did everything better than women, but that was before I read Jane Austen. I dont think any man ever wrote better than Jane Austen. Rex StoutElizabeth Bennet has but to speak, and I am at her knees. Robert Louis StevensonRead again, and for the third time at least, Miss Austens very finely written novel of Pride and Prejudice. That young lady has a talent for describing the involvements and feelings and characters of ordinary life which is to me the most wonderful I ever met with. Sir Walter Scott

An enchanting comedy of errors, Emma remains a classic two centuries after it was first published. Emma Woodhouse is a privileged young woman whose greatest pleasure in life lies in matchmaking for anyone but herself. Written, by Austen’s own admission, as “a heroine whom no one but myself will much like,” Emma’s charm and wit exist in constant tension with her capacity for selfishness and vanity. Despite her intelligence, Emma stumbles from one catastrophe to the next—from a misguided attempt at securing a husband for her friend Harriet Smith to her disastrous meddling in the affairs of new arrivals Frank Churchill and Jane Fairfax—before ultimately falling into her own unexpected happy ending. Both a discerning look at the strictures of Regency England and an enchanting comedy of errors, Emma remains a classic two centuries since it was first published. It is a truth universally acknowledged that Jane Austen is one of the most popular novelists in the English language and her work is more popular today than ever before. The wit and romance of her writing captivate television and cinema audiences worldwide, while boosting the readership of the novels themselves. In an age when attention spans are low and fast, furious action drama overwhelms television and movie audiences, the sheer romance of Jane Austen adaptations has continued to prove itself at awards ceremonies. But who was Jane Austen and what sort of world did she inhabit? Maggie Lane, a respected Austen authority and a committee member of the Jane Austen Society, takes a look at the historical and social period in which Jane Austen was writing ? a time when England was developing into a colonial power, while George III sank into madness and the Regency took hold. Elsewhere, the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars raged and the New World was developing.

Pride and Prejudice is a beautifully written classic for the romantic at heart. Jane Austen is a most accomplished novelist, and her take on gossip and matchmaking is still interesting today. Pride and Prejudice provides a thorough analysis not only of the social customs and structure, but also of the motivations and psychology of the people. Elizabeth Bennett is the focus of the book, and her troubled courtship with the difficult Mr. Darcy provides the main point of conflict. The narrative voice seems to be privy to Lizzy's innermost thoughts, but at times it almost seems like the voice is Elizabeth herself, but older and wiser, looking back on her younger self. The narrator is extremely polite, but sometimes does get off a few zingers at the folly and foibles of the people. The negative commentary is mostly conveyed in the voices of the characters, with Eliza Bennett leading the charge. There is plenty of witty banter, and also a lot of drama that really involves the reader. You will wonder how Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth will ever get together, given all the obstacles they face--the main one being that they can't stand each other. How will Jane and Mr. Bingley get together, what with the meddling of his sister and his friend, Mr. Darcy? Even though the story is mostly gossip and matchmaking, you have no trouble reading through to the end, because Jane Austen is a masterful story teller and a keen observer of human nature. Her portraits of the kind of people you meet in the world are surprisingly accurate, which is even more astonishing when you consider that she wrote more than 200 years ago. Her stories have been the basis for many films, both period dramas and updates, because her uncanny ability to capture the various types of people that make up this crazy world rings true. Jane Austen reveals universal truths about men and women, and that is why her popularity continues unabated.
