हिन्दी कथा-साहित्य के विकास के प्रथम चरण में ही प्रसाद जी ने कविताओं के साथ कथा-साहित्य के क्षेत्र में पदार्पण किया। उनकी सांस्कृतिक अभिरूचि और वैयक्तिक भावानुभूति की स्पष्ट छाप के कारण उनके द्वारा रचित कथा-साहित्य अपनी एक अलग पहचान बनाने में पूर्णतः सक्षम हुआ। जयशंकर प्रसाद अपने समय के प्रयोगधर्मी रचनाकार थे। भारतेन्दु युगीन खुमारी से मुक्त होकर उन्होंने नाटक और कविता के क्षेत्र में ही नहीं कथा साहित्य के क्षेत्र में भी प्रयोग किया। 1926 से 1929 ई. के बीच प्रसाद के दृष्टिकोण में यथार्थ के प्रति परिवर्तन दिखाई पड़ता है। यह परिवर्तन उनकी मूल स्थापनाओं में कम संसार की पहचान के स्तर पर ही अधिक हुआ है। साहित्य, समाज और मानव संस्कृति आदि उनके लिए अलग-अलग प्रत्यय नहीं बल्कि प्रत्यय श्रंखलाएँ हैं। उनकी प्रमुख समस्या है कि मनुष्य के बिना किसी विकृति और अवरोध के कैसे पूर्णता प्राप्त कर सकता है। कैसे वह अपनी मुक्ति के साथ-साथ दूसरों को मुक्त रख सकता है। वे प्रारम्भ से ही आनन्द को एक मूल्य मानकर चलते हैं और बुद्धि या विवेक को अपूर्णता का कारण मानते हैं। कुल मिलाकर प्रसाद जी का कथा साहित्य उनकी सांस्कृतिक दृष्टि और अनुभूति पर रचना बोध के कारण हिन्दी कथा साहित्य में चिरस्मरणीय बना रहेगा

In the Garden of Loneliness presents the reader with a translation into English of one of the masterpiece of modern Hindi Leterature. This masterpiece is Jayshankar Prasad's Ansu. The imagery throughout this long poem (190 stanzas) is of a desperate love, felt by the poet, for a sweetheart who has somehow left him or deserted him. The setting is in a beautiful garden, made desolate by the absence of thte beloved. As the introductin indicates, the desperation of separation (Viraha) can be mythologized into a universal longing of the soul for God or of the modern person's quest for contact with the Spirit beyond the existential loneliness of the materialism of the contemporary world-view.
