"Whether dealing with collective catastrophe or intimate trauma, recovering from emotional and physical hurt is hard. Kathleen O'Connor shows that although Jeremiah's emotionally wrought language can aggravate readers' memories of pain, it also documents the ways an ancient community, and the prophet personally, sought to restore their collapsed social world. Both prophet and book provide a traumatized community language to articulate disaster; move self-understanding from delusional security to identity as survivors; constitute individuals as responsible moral agents; portray God as equally afflicted by disaster; and invite a reconstruction of reality" -- Publisher description.

Two rival views dominate contemporary Jeremiah scholarship. One sees the book as essentially a Deuteronomistic product, the other as stemming largely from the prophet himself. Dr. McConville begins by entering into dialogue with both sides of the debate and then sets out his own method of approach. He sees Jeremiah as moving from hope that the people would repent to the realization that they would not. The so-called Confessions are both the genuine experience of the prophet and part of his proclamation. The theology of the new covenant permits calls to repentance and promises of unconditional redemption to be held together in creative tension. - Back cover.

The books of Jeremiah and Lamentations chronicle the tragic fall of Jerusalem. God spoke through Jeremiah to warn his people of judgment for their sins, urge them to return to his heart, and promise restoration. The book of Jeremiah shares a detailed, personal narrative of Judah’s capture and exile. Jeremiah’s heart broke for his people as he prophesied and suffered alongside them, but his tearful warnings of judgment are pierced by soaring promises of a new heart and a beautiful future. The book of Lamentations is the deeply poetic cry of the Weeping Prophet after the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple. It provides a prayerful and liturgical framework to mourn loss, voice grief, and confess sin while still hoping in God’s ever-present mercy and forgiveness. These timeless prophetic truths balance warning with hope, guiding us in repentance and grief while renewing our confidence in YAHWEH’s endless love. “I will make an everlasting covenant with them, and I will never stop doing good things for them.” Jeremiah 32:40

When Hannah has to leave her pampered life at the court of Babylon to go to the wilderness of Judah, she is frightened at the prospect. Her father Jorah, a judge under the Persian King Cyrus, is a leader of the Jews who want to return to Jerusalem to rebuild their Temple, In accord with a prophecy given by the prophet Isaiah, the Persian King Cyrus releases the Jews and gives them funds for their journey. To Jorah, their mission is a holy quest directed by their God, but Hannah's favorite brother Behai rebels and stays behind. He doesn't believe in the dream of his father, and wants to marry Hannah's best friend and make his own way among the power brokers of the Persian Empire. Although Behai loves his family and tries to help them at first, political pressure against the Jerusalem party forces him to abandon them to their own resources. Only when a plot to rob Jerusalem of military defenses threatens the lives of his family does Behai find the courage to outwit the plotters and prevent a Samaritan attack. Even after this, however, he rejects his father's pleas and turns his back on his family again. Many years later a deadly threat against his brother Eliakim's life brings Behai back into the family fold. The two work together to expose a vicious plot to attack the Jewish colony in Jerusalem and halt the restoration of the Temple. In Jerusalem, Hannah, her family and the other returned exiles struggle against famine and the hostility of the nations already occupying Judah. They make an early effort to lay the foundations of the Temple, but their bright hopes to rebuild the walls are thwarted and delayed for many years. Upon their arrival in Jerusalem, the Zadokite priests returning from exile are surprised to find sacrifices and worship being performed at the ruined Temple site. Levitical priests who stayed even after the final destruction of Jerusalem have been trying to preserve the rituals throughout the long seventy years of the exile. They are met with suspicion and rejection by the haughty Zadokites, who soon take these offices back into their own hands. This lays the foundation for a conflict between the two priestly factions that persists for the next hundred years and further impedes the restoration of a strong Jewish nation. One of these young Levitical priests, Gera, becomes Hannah's friend. As they can, her family supports his struggle to find a place in the restored nation in spite of persecution by the Zadokites. Gera also makes friends with a young priest of noble blood named Jezaiah. Jezaiah has returned with the exiles, and knows Hannah's family. At a chance meeting, Jezaiah and Hannah fall in love, and soon they marry. Gera marries a local girl, and the friendship begun between the two couples persists throughout the next several generations. Hannah's father Jorah and her brother Eliakim work with the secular governments of Prince Sheshbazzar and then of Prince Zerubbabel. They are not cut off from the central government in Babylon, but they are opposed in the court by strong factions which support neighboring provinces. They are also harassed by their neighbors and by desert raiders from the south, and most of all by the regional governor who lives in Samaria. Much of their lives are spent riding from one capital to another trying to build a diplomatic basis for the growth of the restored province of Judah. Padon, another of Hannah's brothers, is a captain at the military garrison. Padon, like his father and older brother, finds no conflict between his desire to restore Judah as a Jewish nation and his loyalty to the Persian King. They realize that Israel cannot survive without the support given them by the Persian King. There are others in the community, however, who see treachery and faithlessness in the collaboration between the pr

The Gospel according to Jeremiah provides some of the best statements of hope and promise in all the Bible. Beyond his costly obedience and faithful endurance, Jeremiah expressed the gospel message of hope. He was the prophet of God's gracious promise: "For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." He would be disappointed to be remembered only for his messages of judgment and lamentation, because he saw himself as the prophet of the Lord's new covenant. Long before the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, Jeremiah embodied the Gethsemane mind-set, took up his cross daily and lived in the power of the resurrection. In his hard-hitting prophetic message, the hope of the Gospel prevailed. Jeremiah's life was a parable of Jesus pointing forward to "The Lord Our Righteousness." Jeremiah didn't sermonize, he embodied the word of the Lord in his life and character. He was not the Incarnate One, but he lived an incarnational life.

The Covenant Motif in Jeremiah's Book of Comfort: Textual and Intertextual Studies of Jeremiah 30-33 examines Jeremiah's promise of a new covenant that God will interiorize his law into people's hearts. This in-depth syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic study of selected texts in Jeremiah 30-33 comprises the foundation for a superb biblical theology of the new covenant. God's pledge that this covenant is «not like the one I made with your fathers» is explored in relation to the Abrahamic, Mosaic, and Davidic covenants. Tiberius Rata makes a theologically and hermeneutically balanced incursion into Old Testament texts used in the New Testament and provides a springboard for further discussion on difficult yet important issues such as the Lord's Supper and the future of Israel.
