This study describes the origins of early Reformed confessional development using the example of those congregations of religious refugees most heavily influenced by John Laski: the congregation at Emden and the Dutch and French Strangers’ Churches in London. At its center are questions about the congregation as the location of ecclesiology. The outlines of Laski’s theology--which viewed the congregation as the communion of the body of Christ--are described in comparison to the approaches of other Reformers and in relationship to daily reality in the second half of the sixteenth century. Working from a rich base of source materials, the author discusses the development of teachings on church offices and the practice of church discipline, thus illuminating the self-understanding of the three congregations. Becker shows how reciprocal influences and attempts to conform led to the unification of doctrine and community life within these congregations.

Diesem Desiderat nimmt sich Anna Paulina Orlowska in ihrem vorliegenden, zweibändigen Werk nun an. Thematisiert werden darin biographische Daten zu Pyre, seine Buchhaltung, Zahlungsmodalitäten, Handelswege, Handelsgüter, Geschäftspartner und vieles andere mehr. Band 2 enthält die kritische Edition des Kaufmannsbuches.

Johannes Haller war der wohl meistgelesene deutsche Historiker seiner Zeit. Allgemeinverständliche Darstellungen zur deutschen Geschichte und mediävistische Arbeiten zur Kirchen- und vor allem zur Papsttumsgeschichte begründeten seinen öffentlichen und wissenschaftlichen Ruhm. Der Deutschbalte und Wahl-Römer gehörte aber trotzdem zeitlebens eher zu den Außenseitern innerhalb der Geschichtswissenschaft. Dafür dürften vor allem Hallers von vielen als »schwierig« wahrgenommener Charakter und seine ausgesprochene Neigung zur Polemik ausschlaggebend gewesen sein. Ein anhaltender Nachruhm blieb ihm außerdem aufgrund seiner politischen Positionierung nach 1918 versagt: Zuerst deutschnationaler Kritiker der Weimarer Republik, zeigte er Anfang der 1930er Jahre Sympathien für die nationalsozialistische Bewegung, die ihn zu einer »angewiderten Bewunderung« (Heribert Müller) des NS-Regimes führten. Die politische Gelehrtenbiographie von Benjamin Hasselhorn analysiert Hallers Lebensweg und rekonstruiert dessen wissenschaftliche, politische und weltanschauliche Entwicklung im Kontext der deutschen Geschichte zwischen 1865 und 1947. Sie zeigt: Haller ist keineswegs ein wissenschaftlich »erledigter« und politisch »belasteter« Historiker von vorgestern, sondern als »vir sui generis« (Fritz Ernst) ein äußerst reizvoller Gegenstand geschichtswissenschaftlicher Forschung, der vielfältige Einblicke in Politik, Religion und Wissenschaft im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert bietet.
