O romancista procura “definir” Literatura brasileira e faz menção a alguns amigos, explica os vários tipos de crítica, desfere alguns golpes contra os políticos do tempo e também apresenta o romance em questão (Sonhos d’ouro – 1872) e finaliza datando e assinando como Senio a sua “carta” de apresentação.
