B. called at my office one day and, drawing me aside, said that he wanted me to go to China for him, to represent him in certain business matters in which he was interested. He thought that the trip would take about five months; told me that I would have one or two travelling companions, and that the rest of the party would sail from New York, via Suez, and join us at Shanghai. To one who had never been so far away from home that it would take more than a day to return, an invitation to travel to the antipodes was somewhat startling.
