This is a true and touching story of one Chinese woman's search for home. It is also an inspiring book about human yearning for a better life. To escape poverty, Flora Li fought her way through the education system and became one of the few women to get into the prestigious Hong Kong University. When the Japanese invaded, she fled to unoccupied China, where she met her future husband, the son of China's finance minister (later deputy prime minister). She thought she had found the ideal husband, but soon discovered that he suffered from emotional disorders caused by family conflicts and the wars he had grown up in. Whenever he had a breakdown, Flora would move the family to another city, from Shanghai to Nanking to Hong Kong to Bangkok to Taipei and finally across the four seas to the U.S. Throughout her migrations, Flora kept her sight on one goal-providing her children with the best possible education. Author of a thriller, Nightfall in Mogadishu, Veronica Li grew up mostly in Hong Kong and moved to the U.S. with her parents at fifteen. She has a B.A. in English from University of California, Berkeley and a master's in International Affairs from Johns Hopkins University. Li was a journalist for seven years, working for the Asian Wall Street Journal and other news organizations. She later joined the World Bank, for which she traveled extensively and got her inspiration for her novel and other writings. Her most recent book is a novel called Confucius Says.

Roots And Sky written by Christie Purifoy and has been published by Revell this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-02-02 with Religion categories.

When Christie Purifoy arrived at Maplehurst that September, she was heavily pregnant with both her fourth child and her dreams of creating a sanctuary that would be a fixed point in her busily spinning world. The sprawling Victorian farmhouse sitting atop a Pennsylvania hill held within its walls the possibility of a place where her family could grow, where friends could gather, and where Christie could finally grasp and hold the thing we all long for--home. In lyrical, contemplative prose, Christie slowly unveils the small trials and triumphs of that first year at Maplehurst--from summer's intense heat and autumn's glorious canopy through winter's still whispers and spring's gentle mercies. Through stories of planting and preserving, of opening the gates wide to neighbors, and of learning to speak the language of a place, Christie invites readers into the joy of small beginnings and the knowledge that the kingdom of God is with us here and now. Anyone who has felt the longing for home, who yearns to reconnect with the beauty of nature, and who values the special blessing of deep relationships with family and friends will love finding themselves in this story of earthly beauty and soaring hope.

A Winter S Journey written by Paul Virilio and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Literary Collections categories.

French cultural theorist and urbanist Paul Virilio is best known for his writings on media, technology, and architecture. Gathered here in A Winter's Journey are four remarkable conversations in which Virilio and architectural writer Marianne Brausch look at a twentieth century characterized by enormous technological acceleration and by technocultural accidents of barbarism and horror. The dialogues in A Winter's Journey--structured loosely around the dates 1940, 1950, 1960, and 1980--chart Virilio's intimate intellectual biography, from his childhood lived against the unstable backdrop of a heavily bombed, wartime Nantes to maturity in a crisis space that is neither entirely militarized nor yet fully civilian, but somewhere between the two. In the course of these conversations, Virilio and Brausch ultimately find hope that in understanding the events of the last century and the cultural responses spawned by them, we can create a more humane era that is more adept at handling the transformations of its technology and culture. A Winter's Journey is a revealing and engaging look into the intellectual life and ideas of one of the most influential theorists of contemporary civilization.
