This book, through spectacular photographs and enthralling first-hand accounts, provides a unique recounting of the magnificent exploits and the terrible tragedies that have occurred on K2, the highest peak in the Karakoram range, from the earliest explorations to the latest ascents completed in the Nineties. Here is the legendary expedition of 1909 led by Luigi Amedeo of Savoy, the Duke of the Abruzzi, which reached an altitude of 6,000 metres; here, too, is the first successful ascent, by Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli in 1954, as members of the Italian team led by Ardito Desio. Readers can follow the struggles of the Americans to conquer K2, in five expeditions, successful at last in 1978, as well as the experiences of dozens more expeditions that resulted in many triumphs...and many deaths. This unique collection of historical and modern photographs alone makes this volume a must-have title for every mountaineer's library.

K2 is a legend - one of the most demanding mountaineering challenges in the world and one of the most treacherous. Extreme, unpredictable weather and the acutely difficult climbing conditions test the technique, endurance and psychological strength of the most experienced mountaineers to the limit and often beyond. Many of the men and women who have sought to reach the summit have failed, often with tragic consequences - over 70 of them have died or disappeared. Yet this, the second highest mountain on Earth, continues to exercise for the worlds top mountaineers a special, and all too often lethal attraction. Richard Sales fascinating new book traces the climbing history of K2 over the last 150 years, he shows in graphic detail how it acquired this awesome reputation: it was during the first serious attempts on the summit in the 1930s and 1950s that K2 became known as the Savage Mountain.

* Paul Petzoldt was a pioneering North American climber and founder of the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) * Details an adventurous, wild, and long life * Drawn from 30 years of personal association and extensive interviews There are old climbers and there are bold climbers, but there are no old, bold climbers. This familiar saying, coined by legendary climber Paul Petzoldt, is one he lived to disprove. When he passed away at the age of 91, Petzoldt's career was marked by decades of achievement in climbing, incomparable passion for outdoor education, wanderlust, and a relentless drive for adventure. Petzoldt's name is synonymous with the Grand Tetons and NOLS, the highly respected outdoor school that he founded. Blazing the trail for an international code of wilderness ethics and safe climbing techniques, Petzoldt devised the voice signaling system that begins with On belay! This intimate biography details Petzoldt's climbing career, including many first ascents in the Tetons, the first American expedition to K2, and the extraordinary leadership accomplishments that made him legendary. •The exploits of mountaineering’s most colorful band of adventurers The Boys of Everest by Clint Willis tells the gripping story of “Bonington’s Boys,” a band of climbers who reinvented mountaineering during the three decades after Everest’s first ascent. It is a story of tremendous courage, astonishing achievement, and heartbreaking loss. Chris Bonington’s inner circle included a dozen of mountaineering’s most legendary figures—Don Whillans, John Harlin, Dougal Haston, Doug Scott, Peter Boardman, Joe Tasker, and others—who together gave birth to a new brand of climbing. They took increasingly challenging risks on now-legendary expeditions to the world’s most fearsome peaks—and they paid an enormous price. Most of them died in the mountains, leaving behind the hardest question of all: was it worth it? “Willis's classy style turns reportage into literature . . . Bonington's Boys come across as raw, anguished souls . . . As Willis describes in his artful prose, their suffering is not just a means to an end (the summit), it is an end.” –The New York Times “A gripping adventure saga . . .”–Publishers Weekly “A death-haunted saga of the scalers of heaven . . .” –Kirkus Reviews “Mr. Willis tells a story that is gripping and poignant and even appalling . . .” –The Wall Street Journal

Proof techniques in cryptography are very difficult to understand, even for students or researchers who major in cryptography. In addition, in contrast to the excessive emphases on the security proofs of the cryptographic schemes, practical aspects of them have received comparatively less attention. This book addresses these two issues by providing detailed, structured proofs and demonstrating examples, applications and implementations of the schemes, so that students and practitioners may obtain a practical view of the schemes. Seong Oun Hwang is a professor in the Department of Computer Engineering and director of Artificial Intelligence Security Research Center, Gachon University, Korea. He received the Ph.D. degree in computer science from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Korea. His research interests include cryptography, cybersecurity, networks, and machine learning. Intae Kim is an associate research fellow at the Institute of Cybersecurity and Cryptology, University of Wollongong, Australia. He received the Ph.D. degree in electronics and computer engineering from Hongik University, Korea. His research interests include cryptography, cybersecurity, and networks. Wai Kong Lee is an assistant professor in UTAR (University Tunku Abdul Rahman), Malaysia. He received the Ph.D. degree in engineering from UTAR, Malaysia. In between 2009 – 2012, he served as an R&D engineer in several multinational companies including Agilent Technologies (now known as Keysight) in Malaysia. His research interests include cryptography engineering, GPU computing, numerical algorithms, Internet of Things (IoT) and energy harvesting.
