These lectures are intended for graduate students and researchers studying methods for the prediction of properties of elementary particles. Today's theory does not allow ab initio computation of all properties of particles like leptons and quarks. Lehr- und Lernbuch der Kern- und Teilchenphysik Das Buch gliedert sich in zwei Teile:Im ersten Teil werden die klassischen "Elementarteilchen" Elektron, Proton und Neutron behandelt. Das Elektron bestimmt die Physik der Atomhülle. Dieser ist das Buch "Tutorial Quantenmechanik" als eigenes Werk gewidmet. Deswegen liegt der Schwerpunkt des ersten Teils hier auf den Eigenschaften von Proton und Neutron und wie sich beide zu Atomkernen zusammenfinden. Die experimentellen Methoden wie bspw. Teilchenbeschleuniger werden genauso diskutiert wie die theoretischen Grundlagen, bspw. die Wirkungsquerschnitte und die "Starke Kernkraft".Es folgen verschiedene Kernmodelle bis zum gegenwärtigen Stand des Wissens, dem Schalenmodell des Atomkerns. Außer den "klassischen" fand man bald neue "Elementarteilchen", die sowohl leichter als auch schwerer als die bekannten Teilchen sein konnten. Das nahm so überhand, dass man schon von einem "Teilchenzoo" sprechen musste. Man hatte solange keine Erklärung hierfür, bis mit der Entdeckung der Quarks Ordnung in dieses Chaos gebracht werden konnte. Dem Aufbau der Hadronen und Baryonen aus diesen "fundamentalen Teilchen" wird breitester Raum gewidmet, samt ihren Wechselwirkungen (elektromagnetisch, stark, schwach). Der Zusammenhalt von Quarks wird über besondere Austauschteilchen - die Gluonen - vermittelt. Dies geschieht nach speziellen Regeln, die ausführlich erläutert werden. Den Abschluss bildet die "Schwache Wechselwirkung" mit wiederum speziellen Austauschteilchen, besonderen Bosonen. Das Buch geht in seiner Ausführlichkeit deutlich über dasjenige hinaus, was in den üblichen, 1.000+ Seiten großen Standardwerken der Experimentalphysik möglich ist. Dabei bietet es den Stoff "von unten nach oben" an, ausgehend von Kenntnissen, wie sie in der gymnasialen Oberstufe gelehrt werden und wiederholt diese sogar.

Most of our present understanding of the elementary building blocks of matter and the forces between them is based on the quantized version of the field theories which are locally symmetric under gauge transformations. The present set of lecture notes gives both a status report and a survey of recent advances for the most important quantization methods in the field theories for elementary particle physics. The first part of the book introduces light-cone quantization as an interesting alternative to the commonly used covariant perturbation theory and functional-integral methods. Next, a general formalism for quantizing systems with constraints, the projection-operator approach, is presented and structural aspects of the renormalization problem for gauge invariant field theories are discussed. Finally, the mathematics underlying the functional-integral quantization is reviewed. Suitable as a reference for researchers in the field, the book will prove particularly useful for lecturers and graduate students in search of additional reading beyond the standard texts on quantum field theory.
