An unexplored, fascinating history of nineteenth-century agrarian life, told through the engaging lens of three families central to the peppermint oil industry This unconventional history relates the engaging and unusual stories of three families in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries whose involvement in the peppermint oil industry provides insights into the perspectives and concerns of rural people of their time. Challenging the standard paradigms, historian Dan Allosso focuses on the rural characters who lived by their own rules and did not acquiesce to contemporary religious doctrines, business mores, and political expediencies. The Ranneys, a secular family in a very religious time and place; the Hotchkisses, who ran banks and printed their own money while the Lincoln administration was eliminating state banking; and the Todd family, who incorporated successful business practices with populist socialism, all highlight the untold story of rural America's engagement with the capitalist marketplace. The families' atypical attitudes and activities offer unexpected perspectives on rural business and life.

The Bible greatly informs every business entrepreneur on numerous issues of building commercial businesses. The primary duties of every business are production and protection. Both duties are simultaneously commanded by God from the very beginning in the Garden of Eden. Indeed, all the parables of Jesus deal with various aspects of productivity and protection, the same concerns of every commercial business. The Bible teaches Biblical capitalism, as opposed to both humanistic capitalism and socialism. Although the Church is central to all productivity and protection efforts of man in God's earth, as illustrated by the centrality of the wilderness tabernacle, the Bible teaches a decentralization of human authority in the earth, including within family, church, government, and commercial business. This Biblical decentralization mandate is rooted in God's institution of marriage. The second law of thermodynamics drives all human empires to eventual failure. Human empire building in family, church, government, and business always leads to destruction and heat death of the engine of productive human society. Only an omnipresent, omnipotent, and omniscient King can rightly and eternally rule a world empire. The Creator is the ultimate property owner of everything in His earth and His law governs all activities of men, regardless of whether or not they acknowledge that fact.

Tabernacle Sermons VOLUME 1 The King's Business (This book is a series of messages dealing with leadership, ministry, and service. In subsequent years (after the first edition) this book was broken into pieces and printed as three different books: (1) "Holy Ghost Ministries," containing chapters 4, and 6-11; (2) "The King's Business," containing chapters 1-3, 13 and 16; and (3) "Service for the King," containing chapters 5, 12, 14-15, 18-20. This book is a reprint of the first edition.) Beginning in 1886 A.B. Simpson began publishing a series of books called "Tabernacle Sermons." These books contained messages that he had preached in the Gospel Tabernacle, New York City, New York and subsequently published in eleven volumes. These books are reprints of their original volumes. The content has been kept as close to the original as possible. Spelling was modernized in a few places, and where there were obvious errors in the text (one or two), comparisons were made to later editions of the books to keep the author's intent. Some of the original eleven volumes were combined, and some of the author's other books were added into the series. VOLUME 1 The King's Business VOLUME 2 The Fullness Of Jesus VOLUME 3 The Gospel Of The Kingdom VOLUME 4 Natural Emblems Of Spiritual Life VOLUME 5 In Christ Containing Three Volumes: The Four-Fold Gospel, The Christ Life, & The Christ Life And The Self Life (This book was originally printed as three separate books: The Four-Fold Gospel, Volume 5 of Tabernacle Sermons; The Christ Life, Volume 8 of Tabernacle Sermons; and The Christ Life And The Self Life, which was printed as an individual book.) These three small volumes were combined as their contents relate to each other, and also to give the reader the most content for their purchase. VOLUME 6 Divine Emblems In Genesis And Exodus (This book was originally printed as two separate volumes: Volume 6, and Volume 7, in the original Tabernacle Sermons.) VOLUME 7 Christ In The Tabernacle And Leviticus (This book was originally printed as two separate books Volume 9 Christ in the Tabernacle - part of the Tabernacle Sermons Series; and Christ in Leviticus - part of the Christ in the Bible Series.) VOLUME 8 Joshua & The Land Of Promise (This book was originally printed as two separate books: The Land Of Promise Volume 10 of Tabernacle Sermons; and Christ in Joshua - part of the Christ in the Bible Series. VOLUME 9 Walking In The Spirit & When The Comforter Came (This book was originally printed as two separate books: "Walking In The Spirit," Volume 11 of Tabernacle Sermons, and "When The Comforter Came" was printed as a thirty-one day devotional dealing with the Holy Spirit.

The remarkable story of Sumner Redstone, his family legacy, and the battles for all he controlled. Sumner Murray Redstone (1923–2020), who lived by the credo "content is king," leveraged his father’s chain of drive-in movie theaters into one of the world’s greatest media empires through a series of audacious takeovers designed to ensure his permanent control. Over the course of this meteoric rise, he made his share of enemies and feuded with nearly every member of his family. In The King of Content, Keach Hagey deconstructs Redstone’s rise from Boston’s West End through Harvard Law School to the highest echelons of American business. The ninety-seven-year-old mogul’s life became a tabloid soap opera, the center of acrimonious legal battles throughout his vast holdings, which included Paramount Pictures and two of the largest public media companies, Viacom and CBS. At the heart of these lawsuits was Redstone’s tumultuous love life and complicated relationship with his children. Redstone’s daughter, Shari, has emerged as his de facto successor, but only after she ousted his closest confidant in a fierce power struggle. Yet Redstone’s assets face an existential threat that goes beyond his family, disgruntled ex-girlfriends, or even the management of his companies: the changing nature of media consumption. As more and more people cut their cable cords, CBS, with its focus on sports and broadcast TV, has held steady, while Viacom, with its once-great cable channels like MTV and Nickelodeon, has suffered a precipitous fall. As their rivals merge, the question is whether Shari’s push to undo her father’s last big strategic maneuver and recombine CBS and Viacom will be enough to shore up their future. A biography and corporate whodunit filled with surprising details, The King of Content investigates Redstone’s impact on business and popular culture, as well as the family feuds, corporate battles, and questionable alliances that go back decades—all laid bare in this authoritative book.
