"e;Hollywood 'happy ending' has long been considered among the most famous and standardised features in the whole of narrative filmmaking. Yet, while ceaselessly invoked, this notorious device has received barely any detailed attention from the field of film studies. This book is thus the first in-depth examination of one of the most overused and under-analysed concepts in discussions of popular cinema. What exactly is the 'happy ending'? Is it simply a cliche, as commonly supposed? Why has it earned such an unenviable reputation? What does it, or can it, mean? Concentrating especially on conclusions featuring an ultimate romantic union - the final couple - this wide-ranging investigation probes traditional associations between the 'happy ending' and homogeneity, closure, 'unrealism', and ideological conservatism, testing widespread assumptions against the evidence offered by a range of classical and contemporary films. This French medieval text is now published in its entirety, accompanied by an introduction and extensive synopses in English. Philippe de Mezieres (1327-1405) was a French soldier, publicist and statesman who travelled widely through much of the Christian world and served a number of rulers, particularly the King of Cyprus and Charles V and VI of France. Throughout his life Philippe de Mezieres was obsessed by the ideal that the West must reform itself in the light of the Christian view of the good life and he urged all Christian rulers to join together in a final crusade to liberate the Holy Land and the eastern Christian empires. This is the underlying theme of Le Songe du Vieil Pelerin, Philippe de Mezieres' major work. It is divided into three parts: the first is a wide-ranging survey of the Christian world, the second an examination of the state of France and the third a study of the duties and requirements of authority. The style is highly allegorical but contains much personal observation and historical fact.

"Drawing upon new manuscript discoveries, the author shows how Burchard tried to create a new text that would address these problems. He carefully selected and compiled canons from earlier collections and then went on to tamper systematically with the texts he had chosen. By doing so, he created a book of church law that appeared to be based on indisputable authority, that was internally consistent and that was easy to apply through logical extrapolation to new cases. The present study thus provides a window into the development of legal and theological reasoning in the medieval West, and suggests that, thanks to the work of ambitious bishops, the flowering of law and theology began far earlier, and for different reasons, than scholars have heretofore supposed."--BOOK JACKET.

The Happy End of Comedy is an analysis of the most necessary of all comic conventions -- the happy ending. The book begins by assuming that the study of the ways three major playwrights brought their works to a close will reveal much about their conception of the artifice of theater and comedy and about their sense of human experience, which informs this artifice. Happy End is thus both a study of the uses and variations on a convention and a definition of each playwright's comic ethos. -- from book jacket.

This work is a valuable contribution to the subject of picture-writing. Anthropology and the Humanities might seem coextensive, yet they divide the domain of human culture among them in practice. The types of human culture are reducible to two, a simpler and a more complicated, or a lower and a higher. By set convention, Anthropology occupies itself solely with the simpler or lower kind of culture. On the other hand, the Humanities focus on whatever is most integral and typical of the higher life of society. Six influential personalities delivered these six lectures during the Michaelmas Term of 1908 at the Committee for Anthropology, which from the beginning of its career has kept steadily in view the need of persuading classical scholars to examine the lower culture as it bears upon the higher. In this volume an international team of contributors address several key themes surrounding the role of the press in the French Revolution, including the beginnings of the Revolution and its impact on the press; how Old Regime journals reacted to the Revolution; the roles of journalists - both popular and elitist - in the politics of the Revolution; language and revolution; and images and their uses. Whilst not neglecting the production and economics of periodicals of the time, several contributors make use of the notion of discourse, and highlight various aspects of language and ideas in a revolutionary context. The Press in the French Revolution contains expanded versions of papers presented at the University of Haifa in the spring of 1987. Contributors include some of the leading historians of the press and revolutionary France: Antoine de Baecque, Raymond Birn, Jean-Paul Bertaud, Jack Censer, Elizabeth Eisenstein, Sarah Maza, Harvey Mitchell, Jeremy Popkin, Pierre R tat, Denis Richet, Jean Sgard, Suzanne Tucoo-Chala, Michel Vovelle and Jacques Wagner.
