Since 2001 the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa has organized the "Colloquio De Giorgi", a series of colloquium talks named after Ennio De Giorgi. The Colloquio is addressed to a general mathematical audience, and especially meant to attract graduate students and advanced undergraduate students. The lectures are intended to be not too technical, in fields of wide interest. They must provide an overview of the general topic, possibly in a historical perspective, together with a description of more recent progress. The idea of collecting the materials from these lectures and publishing them in annual volumes came out recently, as a recognition of their intrinsic mathematical interest, and also with the aim of preserving memory of these events.

The renowned and illustrious tales of King Arthur, his knights and the Round Table pervade all European vernaculars, as well as the Latin tradition. Arthurian narrative material, which had originally been transmitted in oral culture, began to be inscribed regularly in the twelfth century, developing from (pseudo-)historical beginnings in the Latin chronicles of "historians" such as Geoffrey of Monmouth into masterful literary works like the romances of Chrétien de Troyes. Evidently a big hit, Arthur found himself being swiftly translated, adapted and integrated into the literary traditions of almost every European vernacular during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. This Handbook seeks to showcase the European character of Arthurian romance both past and present. By working across national philological boundaries, which in the past have tended to segregate the study of Arthurian romance according to language, as well as by exploring primary texts from different vernaculars and the Latin tradition in conjunction with recent theoretical concepts and approaches, this Handbook brings together a pioneering and more complete view of the specifically European context of Arthurian romance, and promotes the more connected study of Arthurian literature across the entirety of its European context.

By pursuing an ecocritical reading, The Forest in Medieval German Literature examines passages in medieval German texts where protagonists operated in the forest and found themselves either in conflictual situations or in refuge. By probing the way the individual authors dealt with the forest, illustrating how their characters fared in this sylvan space, the role of the forest proved to be of supreme importance in understanding the fundamental relationship between humans and nature. The medieval forest almost always introduced an epistemological challenge: how to cope in life, or how to find one’s way in this natural maze. By approaching these narratives through modern ecocritical issues that are paired with premodern perspectives, we gain a solid and far-reaching understanding of how medieval concepts can aid in a better understanding of human society and nature in its historical context. Das Thema dieser Doktorarbeit ist die Reorientierung und Auswertung von vektoriellen Magnetfelddaten, die in zwei Bohrungen während der IODP Expedition 330 zu den Louisville Seamounts aufgezeichnet wurden. Ein Ziel der Expedition war festzustellen, ob sich der Louisville Hotspot relativ zu dem Hawaiian-Emperor Hotspot im Erdmantel bewegt oder ob er stationär ist. Für die Magnetfeldmessungen wurde das Göttinger Bohrlochmagnetometer verwendet, dessen faseroptische Kreisel in der Lage sind, die Drehungen der Sonde im Bohrloch zu bestimmen, wodurch das gemessene Magnetfeld aus dem Bezugssystem der Sonde in das geographische Koordinatensystem reorientiert werden kann. Es werden verschiedene Algorithmen vorgestellt, die auf unterschiedliche Art und Weise die vorhandenen Sensoren kombinieren, um die Daten bestmöglich zu orientieren. Weiterhin werden verschiedene Schichtmodelle verwendet, um die Richtung der Gesteinsmagnetisierung aus den Magnetfelddaten zu bestimmen, wobei auf Uneindeutigkeiten und Messfehler eingegangen wird. Die Ergebnisse dieser Modellierungen unterstützen die Annahme eines stationären Louisville Hotspots.
