This book is a part of a broad study about Confucianism and its implications for modernisation of the Confucian regions (covering mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, North Korea, and Singapore). Singapore provides a typical example for understanding the Chinese 'Westernising' processes as well as for investigating possible implications of Confucianism for modernisation. It is argued that the difference in modernisation processes between the mainland China and overseas Chinese is much due to the differences in population size and geography. Since the Western powers had enforced China to open its doors to Western powers from the Opium War, many Chinese people left China for overseas. It is in foreign lands and in Taiwan that the Chinese have benefited from Western thought and institutions.

Has any individual ever shaped his own civilization more thoroughly than Confucius? Certainly no other world figure has ever been presented as more of an exemplar to his countrymen. Yet what we know about the man himself is vague and shadowy, and the sayings attributed to him may seem obscure to the Westerner. Raymond Dawson addresses these paradoxes. Taking as a model the Chinese tradition of commentary on classical texts--in this case the Analects, the oldest and most reliable Confucian text--he finds a body of thought whose expression does seem to reflect the views and aspirations of a recognizable person. He shows how the separate components of the Master's thought cohere into a distinct social, ethical, and intellectual system. Dawson elucidates the contemporary applicability of the sayings as well as the strength of their influence throughout the two and a half millennia of their currency, even in a China that has formally rejected them.

This third volume of Princeton Readings in Religions demonstrates that the "three religions" of China--Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism (with a fourth, folk religion, sometimes added)--are not mutually exclusive: they overlap and interact with each other in a rich variety of ways. The volume also illustrates some of the many interactions between Han culture and the cultures designated by the current government as "minorities." Selections from minority cultures here, for instance, are the folktale of Ny Dan the Manchu Shamaness and a funeral chant of the Yi nationality collected by local researchers in the early 1980s. Each of the forty unusual selections, from ancient oracle bones to stirring accounts of mystic visions, is preceded by a substantial introduction. As with the other volumes, most of the selections here have never been translated before. Stephen Teiser provides a general introduction in which the major themes and categories of the religions of China are analyzed. The book represents an attempt to move from one conception of the "Chinese spirit" to a picture of many spirits, including a Laozi who acquires magical powers and eventually ascends to heaven in broad daylight; the white-robed Guanyin, one of the most beloved Buddhist deities in China; and the burning-mouth hungry ghost. The book concludes with a section on "earthly conduct."
