The storage of electroenergy is an essential feature of modem energy technologies. Unfortunately, no economical and technically feasible method for the solution of this severe problem is presently available. But electrochemistry is a favourite candidate from an engineering point of view. It promises the highest energy densities of all possible alternatives. If this is true, there will be a proportionality between the amount of electricity to be stored and the possible voltage, together with the mass of materials which make this storage possible. Insofar it is a matter of material science to develop adequate systems. Electricity is by far the most important secondary energy source. The present production rate, mainly in the thermal electric power stations, is in the order of 1.3 TW. Rechargeable batteries (RB) are of widespread use in practice for electroenergy storage and supply. The total capacity of primary and rechargeable batteries being exploited is the same as that of the world electric power stations. However, the important goal in the light of modem energy technology, namely the economical storage of large amounts of electricity for electric vehicles, electric route transport, load levelling, solar energy utilization, civil video & audio devices, earth and spatial communications, etc. will not be met by the presently available systems. Unless some of the new emerging electrochemical systems are established up to date, RB's based on aqueous acidic or alkali accumulators are mainly produced today.

The fast progress in computer networks and their wide availability complemented with on one hand the "explosion" of the mobile computing and on the other hand the trends in the direction of ubiquitous computing, act as powerful enablers for new forms of highly dynamic collaborative organizations and emergence of new business practices. The first efforts in virtual enterprises (VE) were strongly constrained by the need to design and develop horizontal infrastructures aimed at supporting the basic collaboration needs of consortia of enterprises. Even pilot projects that were focused on specific business domains were forced to first develop some basic infrastructures before being able to develop their specific business models. Nowadays, although there is still a need to consolidate and standardize the horizontal infrastructures, the focus is more and more directed to the development of new vertical business models and the corresponding support tools. At the same time, in the earlier R&D projects, the attention was almost exclusively devoted to the operation phase of the VE life cycle, while now there are more activities addressing the creation phase, developing mechanisms to support the rapid formation of new virtual organizations for new business opportunities. In order to complete the life cycle, there is a need to also invest on support for VE dissolution.

The Plant Root and the Rhizosphere was a major topical feature of the first International Symposium on Factors Determining the Behavior of Plant Pathogens in Soil held at the University of California, Berkeley in 1963. The symposium was edited by K. F. Baker and W. C. Snyder and published under the title Ecology of Soil-Borne Plant Pathogens. Since that time, several other international efforts, either on the root-soil interface specifically or on topics relating to the root environment, have provided"a wealth of valuable information basic to promoting the culture of healthier, more productive plants. The rapidly growing number of papers and patents on Cyclodextrins and their potential or actual industrial uses raised the idea to organize a Symposium on Cyclodextrins. This Symposium - held in September 1981 in Budapest, with more than 200 participants from 17 countries - proved to be very succesfull in every respect, therefore it has been accepted unanimously to organize the lInd CD-Symposium in 1984, in Tokyo. (The Budapest-Symposium got posteriorly the "First" adjective). The IInd Symposium was held together with the III. Int. Symposium on Chlatrate Compounds and Molecular Inclusion Phenomena. The IIIrd CD-Symposium also was held as a Joint Symposium, with the IVth. Chlatrate Symposium in Lancaster, U. K. ,1986. The limited time however showed, that such a broad field - from calixarenes to zeolites - can not be managed efficiently. Therefore the International Organizing Committee voted for separation of two Symposia in the future. The IVth Int. CD-Symposium was held in the Munich, in April 1988, and the Vth Chlatrate Symposium (called already Vth Int. Symposium on Inclusion Phenomena and Molecular Recognition) was held in Alabama, Sept. 1988. In Munich 220 participants from 21 countries attended 32 verbal lectures and 54 posters. This volume contains the submitted 71 manuscripts of the IVth Cyclodextrin Symposium.
