June 30, 1944, fifty members of the United States 460th Bomb Group embarked on an important mission to destroy German oil refineries in Silesia, Hungary, only to come under heavy attack. Above the cloud cover, German twin-engine Me-410 fighters firing 20-millimeter cannons blasted seven B-24s out of the sky. Seventeen U.S. airmen were killed, twenty-four captured, with many burned, wounded, or beaten by Hungarian peasants after parachuting to the ground. This single event marked the beginning of a heart-wrenching episode in the life of one airman: T/Sgt. John L. Lenburg. On his thirty-sixth mission, he was shot down along with the crew of their B-24, “Miss Fortune,” over enemy lines near Lake Balaton, Hungary. Taken prisoner (or “Kriegsgefangenen #6410,” the code name the Germans gave him), he never knew if he would see his homeland again. WALK TO FREEDOM: Kriegsgefangenen #6410 - Prisoner of War is Lenburg’s powerful, compelling account of his 327 days of imprisonment and long walk to freedom eleven months after his capture. Recalling the inhumane treatment and horrific conditions of his encampment, the missions and memories, and the reunions of the few who survived fifty years later, this revised and expanded, illustrated memoir demonstrates why Lenburg and his crew were “the greatest generation” of their time. REVIEWS "A stirring account of experiences in the Army Air Force during World War II and particularly his time in a Nazi prison camp." - Indianapolis Star "A powerful saga of violence, suffering, strength of character and the determination to persevere...a welcome and much appreciated contribution to the growing library of World War II combatant biographies and eye-witness memoirs." --Midwest Book Review

Matt Groening is a cartoonist, animator, and producer best known for creating "The Simpsons," television's longest-running primetime animated series. Although it debuted as a series of cartoon shorts for another television show in 1987, "The Simpsons" launched on its own in 1989, making the dysfunctional family of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie famous almost overnight. At the time, Groening was already a successful cartoonist, whose "Life in Hell" comic strip appeared in underground newspapers and book collections. The Simpsons became a cultural phenomenon while Groening went to create the animated science-fiction series "Futurama," launch a Simpsons-based publishing company called Bongo Comics, and produce "The Simpsons Movie.""Matt Groening: From Spitballs to Springfield" by Jeff Lenburg describes the life and career of one of animation's most successful artists, known for his unique drawing style and quirky sense of humor.

2014 Libris Award — Joint Winner, Non-Fiction Book of the Year Globe and Mail Bestseller Toronto Star Bestseller A unique retelling of WWII’s most dramatic escape, told through first-hand recollections of the soldiers who experienced it. On the night of March 24, 1944, eighty airmen crawled through a 400-foot-long tunnel, code-named "Harry," and dashed from Stalag Luft III, the infamous WWII German POW camp. It became known as The Great Escape. The breakout had taken a year to plan, involved 2,000 POWs, and prompted a massive manhunt across occupied Europe. All but three escapees were recaptured, and on Hitler’s orders, fifty were murdered. Bestselling author Ted Barris revisits the story made famous by the 1963 movie. But he recounts this battle of wits and determination through the voices of those involved. Drawing on the experiences of forty years of experience as a journalist, broadcaster, and historian, Barris assembles original interviews, memoirs, letters, diaries, and personal photos to reconstruct the Great Escape’s untold story.

Determined to take on the Nazis, Texan Bill Ash joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939 and in so doing sacrificed his citizenship. Before long, he was sent to England wherehe flew Spitfires. Shot down over France in March 1942, he survived the crash-landing and, thanks to local civilians, evaded capture for months only to be betrayed to the Gestapo in Paris. Tortured and sentenced to death as a spy, he was saved from the firing squad by the Luftwaffe who sent him to the infamous 'Great Escape' POW camp, Stalag Luft III. It was from there that Bill began his 'tour' of Occupied Europe. Breaking out of a succession of camps, he became one of only a handful of serial escape artists to attempt more than a dozen break-outs - over the wire, under it in tunnels, through it with cutters or simply strolling out of the camp gates in disguise! They were years of extraordinary hardship, frustration and brutality - the penalty for escaping was a long spell in solitary - but throughout it all Bill Ash displayed not just remarkable courage but also an anarchic sense of humour, great humanity and an unstoppable desire for freedom. Honest, funny and exciting, Under the Wire is both a riveting war memoir and a tribute to the bravery and resolve of an entire generation.

It is over fifty years since the critics of the day acclaimed The Wooden Horse as a superbly told story of the most ingenious and daring escape of the Second World War. Millions of readers agreed, and the book became a modern classic. This revised and expanded edition tells the tale. The escape itself was conceived on classical lines. The Greeks built a wooden horse and by means of it got into the city of Troy; in 1943 two British officers built a wooden horse and by means of it got out of a German prison camp. Together with a third companion, they were the only British prisoners ever to escape and reach England from this camp, though many tried. It was Stalag Luft III, designed especially to hold the Germans' most prized captives – Allied aircrew – and considered to be escape-proof. The break from the camp itself is only part of the story. Once outside the wire the escapers were still faced with the problem of getting out of Germany. Fugitives in the midst of a watchful enemy population, they had many close shaves when disaster threatened to overwhelm them – adventures which the reader shares to the full. The fantastic nature of this enterprise, the patience, determination and endurance, above all the steel nerve it demanded from an undernourished physique, are rendered the more impressive by the manner of the telling. The characters are so surely drawn that they could not but be real. Throughout the book runs a vein of humour which alone made those days bearable. The warmth of human companionship born of privation, fear and a common purpose is vividly portrayed.

FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE CRITICALLY-ACCLAIMED NOVEL, SCARED TO DEATH, COMES HIS LATEST PAGE-TURNER Luke Beckett is anything but your average Hollywood vice squad detective. A cop who refuses to play the game, he is like some Avenging Angel always quick to judge, and to punish with his rock-hard fists those who don’t see his way. Forced to resign after a prostitute bust goes awry, he accepts a police lieutenant position in that God-forsaken place, Palm Springs, where there is hardly enough action to keep his blood circulating. That all changes when his ex-wife Marcia, since re-married to an aging American tycoon and one of Palm Springs’ wealthiest, most influential residents, is found murdered at a swank party under suspicious circumstances with hardly a clue. Assigned to investigate her murder, this short-tempered, superbly trained former big city cop finds more than he expects—a secret romance with a lesbian lover and possible mob connections to her untimely death and assassination attempt on his own life—in this engaging, thought-provoking original hard-boiled mystery.
