Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: Vierzehn Jahre nach der deutschen Wiedervereinigung scheinen die Deutschen in Ost und West von der so genannten Inneren Einheit weiter entfernt zu sein als je zuvor. Insbesondere nationale Reformprojekte, die mit Einschnitten im Sozialsystem verbunden sind, machen dies immer wieder deutlich. Die Transformationsforschung und die politische Kulturforschung hat im Laufe dieser eineinhalb Jahrzehnte eine Vielzahl von Erklärungsansätzen geliefert, die im einzelnen keine zufriedenstellende Erklärung des Problems liefern können und sich zum Teil sogar diametral gegenüberstehen, einander widersprechen oder gar das Problem der inneren Einheit als solches in Frage stellen. Obwohl die empirischen Befunde über das Transformations- und Einheitsprojekt im Prinzip recht eindeutig sind, wird die deutsche Einheit unterschiedlich bilanziert. Jede Vereinigungsbilanz in Politik, Wirtschaft und Wissenschaft bringt auch eine spezifische Position zum Stand der inneren Einheit hervor. Die Positionen verteilen sich dabei, je nach Blickwinkel des Betrachters, über ein weites Spektrum. Angefangen beim Standpunkt einer gelungenen Einheit, die auf dem richtigen Weg ist, bei der Wert- und Einstellungsdifferenzen zwischen den Deutschen im Osten und Westen des Landes als marginal bezeichnet werden und kaum über andere regionale Differenzen hinaus gehen, über die Position einer kulturellen Differenzierung über eine ostdeutsche Sonderidentität, die eine Normalisierung und Bereicherung der politischen Kultur der Bundesrepublik darstellt, bis hin zur Bilanz, dass fundamentale Wertunterschiede und eine Abgrenzungsidentität auf Seiten der Ostdeutschen ein hohes anomisches Potential besitzen, die die demokratische politische Kultur Deutschlands gefährden. Es stellen sich folgende zentrale Fragen, die sehr unterschiedlich beantwortet werden: Wie verschieden sind, denken und handeln die Menschen in Ost und West? Wie notwendig ist eine Angleichung? Mit welchen Begriffen sind die Unterschiede zu fassen und wie wirkungsmächtig sind diese? Doch worin sind diese inkohärenten Urteile begründet, die als Antworten auf die gleichen Fragen mit der gleichen empirischen Datenbasis angeboten werden? Ein Grund dafür stellt die mehrfach kritisierte mangelnde theoretische Fundierung der sozialwissenschaftlichen Analysen dar. The range of perspectives and original materials dealt with here highlights the renewed urgency of the struggle for cultural autonomy and voice within the context of globalization. Each author explores how the various processes at both the local and global levels intersect to create new discourses and debates around the "indigenization of knowledge." If a new wind of cultural decolonization is blowing through the Arab Middle East and is having profound impact on the lives of men and women, then we should expect a new scholarship to emerge in order to grasp it. This book is a contribution in that direction. A key dimension concerns the issue of borders and boundaries. These are both real and imaginary (i.e., symbolic and metaphoric), hegemonic and counter-hegemonic. Among these borders are spatial ones that determine individuals' and communities' everyday location and place in the world--these include boundaries of class, gender, territory, and language. Each of these separations in turn has embedded in it, and rests on constructions of "imaginary" borders and boundaries. The real and imaginary do not exist as two disparate entities but are inextricably linked to each other in a dialectical move that simultaneously enables and disables movement and action. Current re-visioning of globalization challenges past suppositions. Globalization is a new form of an ongoing process that took inception during the heyday of colonialism. It might serve as a descriptive term to articulate the current historical period, but it remains theoretically problematic and imprecise. Situating Globalization picks up on the problematics of power and its dispersal and concentration. The bearers of these cultural flows seek legitimacy from their potential constituency by positing their language--cultural and religious--as local and therefore inherently in opposition to the hegemonic cultural knowledge that has seeped in from "outside" and led to disempowerment of local "peoples" and "knowledges." Bearers make no mention to this Islamist knowledge, of the "foreignness" of this idiom to many within the societies in question. Any attempt to contest their positioning and bearers of the indigenous results in charges of either betrayal or brainwashing. Cynthia Nelson is professor of anthropology and dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Sarah Lawrence College. She is author of Doria Shafik, Egyptian Feminist: A Woman Apart. Shahnaz Rouse is a member of its sociology faculty. Her research interests and publications cover agrarian transformation; social movements; the state, religion and gender identity.

This volume presents a mix of translations of classical and modern papers from the German Didaktik tradition, newly prepared essays by German scholars and practitioners writing from within the tradition, and interpretive essays by U.S. scholars. It brings this tradition, which virtually dominated German curricular thought and teacher education until the 1960s when American curriculum theory entered Germany--and which is now experiencing a renaissance--to the English-speaking world, where it has been essentially unknown. The intent is to capture in one volume the core (at least) of the tradition of Didaktik and to communicate its potential relevance to English-language curricularists and teacher educators. It introduces a theoretical tradition which, although very different in almost every respect from those we know, offers a set of approaches that suggest ways of thinking about problems of reflection on curricular and teaching praxis (the core focus of the tradition) which the editors believe are accessible to North American readers--with appropriate "translation." These ways of thinking and related praxis are very relevant to notions such as reflective teaching and the discourse on teachers as professionals. By raising the possibility that the "new" tradition of Didaktik can be highly suggestive for thinking through issues related to a number of central ideas within contemporary discourse--and for exploring the implications of these ideas for both teacher education and for a curriculum theory appropriate to these new contexts for theorizing, this book opens up a gold mine of theoretical and practical possibilities.
