Quinze ans après l'adoption des programmes d'ajustement, le marché du travail est l'un des secteurs qui a le plus ressenti les effets de cette politique. Depuis 1980, la crise s'est traduite par de nombreuses pertes d'emplois et une réduction sensible des recrutements de l'Etat, principal employeur. La déprime de l'emploi dans le secteur industriel illustre également la crise prolongée qui affecte l'économie du pays. Ce livre est le fruit d'une collaboration entre chercheurs universitaires et professionnels qui se sont engagés à mener une réflexion critique sur l'ajustement structurel et l'emploi au Sénégal. Cette recherche collective éclaire la problématique de la relance économique au Sénégal. Elle établit qu'à elle seule, la politique d'ajustement par la main-d'œuvre, faite de pression sur le facteur travail et de réforme du Code du travail, ne saurait être une panacée destinée à tonifier l'économie sénégalaise. Le Conseil pour le développement de la recherche en sciences sociales en Afrique (CODESRIA), qui a son siège à Dakar (Sénégal), est une organisation autonome qui a essentiellement pour mission de faciliter la recherche, de promouvoir la publication des résultats de recherches et de créer des fora permettant aux chercheurs africains d'échanger des points de vue et des informations. Il lutte contre la fragmentation de la recherche en créant des réseaux de recherches thématiques qui transcendent les barrières linguistiques et régionales : Le CODESRIA publie une revue trimestrielle, Afrique et Développement, la revue qui bat le record de longévité en Afrique. Les résultats des recherches sont diffusés à travers les Documents de travail, la Série de monographes et la Série de livres du CODESRIA.
