Both cases demonstrate that expansion can be achieved by carefully marketing apprenticeship and by introducing the model to new, emerging sectors of the economy, but that precautions must also be taken to ensure the quality of the placements being offered and thus also the value and transferability of the credentials earned. [...] The list continues to include the academically weaker nature of apprenticeship candidates in Canada, the low status of apprenticeship and the impact of salary interruption during training. [...] While the federal government is involved through Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) in certain elements of apprenticeship deemed to have national relevance, such as the establishment of the interprovincial Red Seal program, many of the key decisions, including the passing of legislation and the establishment of apprenticeable trades, are made at the provincial level. [...] The intervention of the Australian federal government in two key areas - the passing of national legislation and the creation of national competency standards for apprenticeship - may contain important lessons for Canada, where the lack of national legislation and of national competency standards in many occupation areas are identified as particular shortcomings of the apprenticeship system in the [...] This contrasts to the situation in England, where the lack of national legislation on apprenticeship and the lengthy list of credentials one can acquire have made both the value of an apprenticeship and the transferability of the credentials earned questionable.

Mais l'apprentissage ne se décrète pas, il s'effectue, pour chacun, de manière active et singulière. Et c'est l'apprentissage réussi qui, à l'Ecole, est véritablement éducatif. Il restait encore à fournir des jalons qui permettent de passer à l'acte... C'est ainsi qu'est définie la " pédagogie différenciée " : accordée à un univers où la pluralité devient un trait dominant, elle se propose de briser la rigidité du fonctionnement habituel de la classe en élaborant des itinéraires d'apprentissage diversifiés et en mettant en œuvre de nombreux outils : grilles d'évaluation, diversification des méthodes et des technologies, plans de travail, contrats, travail en équipe des enseignants, groupes de besoins, etc. Plus profondément encore, parce qu'elle permet d'associer l'élève à la recherche et à la définition de ses méthodes de travail, la différenciation de la pédagogie est un moyen particulièrement précieux pour redonner vie et sens à l'éducation scolaire. Très dense et riche, le livre de Philippe Meirieu apporte un éclairage neuf. C’est alors que nous avons cru bon de les transporter dans un environnement de vie naissante où il n’y avait ni maitre ni école pour imaginer comment se faisait l’apprentissage. Il devenait alors plus facile de percevoir le lien entre apprentissage et satisfaction des besoins primaires des premiers hommes. Ce livre s’inspire des résultats de chercheurs qui avant nous ont interrogé notre préhistoire en vue de découvrir comment nos ancêtres ont abordé l’apprentissage au point de laisser ce riche héritage de découvertes qui impactent le monde d’aujourd’hui ! Nous avons l’occasion de visiter quelques maîtres connus du passé pour essayer de comprendre leurs méthodes et espérons qu’une fois à destination, chacun de nous comprendra la philosophie de base de l’apprentissage, car il y a une façon d’aider à apprendre si nous pensons que la connaissance est construite et cette façon d'apprendre diverge de celle de ceux qui croient en une connaissance transmise !
