L'esthétique est à la mode. Travaux et analyses se multiplient. Tous prétendent renouveler le sujet alors que la plupart puisent à la même source : la tradition spéculative de l'Art qui affirme que l'Art est un savoir extatique. Celui-ci révélerait des vérités transcendantes, inaccessibles aux activités intellectuelles profanes. En cela, il occuperait aujourd'hui la place qui incombait autrefois à la religion.La tradition implique donc que les arts soient sacralisés, mais aussi, par le même mouvement, opposés aux autres activités humaines - à l'exception fort évidemment de la philosophie. Jean-Marie Schaeffer, après une lecture critique et généalogique de ce système spéculatif dont nous vivons actuellement la crise profonde, définit ce que pourrait être une expérience esthétique alternative, qui permette de vivre ce que la tradition nous fait manquer : comment voir un tableau si l'on refuse de croire à l'existence d'un arrière-monde ? Comment oublier l'Art afin de redécouvrir les arts dans leur richesse particulière et multiforme ? Comment, enfin, fonder une expérience esthétique commune dès lors que l'on renonce à la conformité des oeuvres aux essences et au Beau ?
