Le second tiers du XIXè siècle voit s'affirmer une nouvelle économie du livre. La presse mécanique à vapeur, la machine à papier continu, la reliure industrielle permettent une première industrialisation de sa fabrication. Les tirages toutefois restent modestes et l'édition demeure dominée par les genres et les titres de la tradition. La véritable rupture vient après la mi-siècle : les techniques de composition et d'illustration sont à leur tour industrialisées grâce aux linotypes, puis aux monotypes et à la photogravure. Mais, dès la décennie 1850, la production change d'échelle : elle franchit le seuil des 12 000 titres annuels. Car de nouvelles catégories de lecteurs apparaissent. De Guizot à Ferry, l'école (mais pas seulement elle) a alphabétisé les Français : l'enfant, la femme, le peuple, deviennent les figures emblématiques de ces consommateurs d'imprimés. Dans les années 1830, l'édition française invente des objets nouveaux, réduit les formats (ainsi avec les classiques Charpentier en format in-18), emprunte au journal la formule des fascicules largement illustrés, bon marché et lancés à grand renfort de publicité. 1848 marque l'échec du projet romantique et ouvre la voie à d'autres publics, ceux du manuel scolaire, du livre pour la jeunesse, de la littérature de gare, des ouvrages encyclopédiques. Enfin, la crise de surproduction de la fin du siècle opère un tri drastique parmi les éditeurs établis tout en favorisant de nouveaux venus. Concentrant entre ses mains la totalité du processus de production du livre, l'éditeur donne désormais la plus grande part de son temps, non plus au commerce de librairie ou à l'activité d'imprimerie, mais à la lecture des manuscrits, aux rencontres avec les auteurs, à la constitution de son fonds propre. La profession y gagne une légitimité intellectuelle inédite tandis que les plus habiles de ses membres deviennent des propriétaires cossus ou des capitalistes hardis. L'évolution est grosse de risques (d'où les faillites nombreuses qui scandent le siècle) et d'âpres conflits surgissent avec les auteurs qui, de plus en plus, veulent ou doivent vivre de leur plume.
