La problématique du handicap, sous ses diverses formes, est bien reconnue et posée aujourd'hui dans nos sociétés. Beaucoup d'efforts ont été et sont consentis pour créer des structures susceptibles de répondre aux besoins particuliers des enfants, adolescents et adultes handicapés. Simultanément, on cherche de plus en plus à intégrer ces personnes dans le tissu social habituel, qu'il s'agisse des milieux scolaires, sociaux ou professionnels. Si une partie du chemin a été parcourue, il reste encore beaucoup à faire en matière de dépistage et d'évaluation précise, et notamment développementale, des nombreuses formes et variétés de handicap. Malgré d'évidents progrès au cours de ces dernières années, les procédures d'intervention remédiative, précoce et continuée au long de l'existence, restent insuffisamment efficaces, faute de recherches et de connaissances fondamentales suffisantes. On a à peine touché jusqu'ici aux difficiles problèmes portant sur la vie des adultes handicapés, particulièrement pour ce qui est des handicaps lourds voire des multihandicaps. Leur intégration sociale et professionnelle reste délicate, leur vie affective et sexuelle souvent peu prise en considération. Enfin, le vieillissement de ces personnes, compte tenu des gains appréciables de longévité, commence seulement à faire l'objet de recherches et d'adaptations concrètes. L'ouvrage présente, discute et met en perspective l'ensemble des problématiques concernant les diverses formes de handicap. Il est, en tant que synthèse spécialisée, unique en son genre dans la littérature francophone.
