Katherine A. McIver here adds a new dimension to Renaissance patronage studies by considering domestic art; she looks at women as collectors of precious material goods, organizers of the early modern home, and decorators of its interior. Using her subjects' financial records, McIver provides insights into Renaissance women's economic rights and responsibilities, and also provides a new model for understanding what women of the period bought, displayed, collected and commissioned.

Throughout human history luxury textiles have been used as a marker of importance, power and distinction. Yet, as the essays in this collection make clear, the term ‘luxury’ is one that can be fraught with difficulties for historians. Focusing upon the consumption, commercialisation and production of luxury textiles in Italy and the Low Countries during the late medieval and early modern period, this volume offers a fascinating exploration of the varied and subtle ways that luxury could be interpreted and understood in the past. Beginning with the consumption of luxury textiles, it takes the reader on a journey back from the market place, to the commercialisation of rich fabrics by an international network of traders, before arriving at the workshop to explore the Italian and Burgundian world of production of damasks, silks and tapestries. The first part of the volume deals with the consumption of luxury textiles, through an investigation of courtly purchases, as well as urban and clerical markets, before the chapters in part two move on to explore the commercialisation of luxury textiles by merchants who facilitated their trade from the cities of Lucca, Florence and Venice. The third part then focusses upon manufacture, encouraging consideration of the concept of luxury during this period through the Italian silk industry and the production of high-quality woollens in the Low Countries. Graeme Small draws the various themes of the volume together in a conclusion that suggests profitable future avenues of research into this important subject.

Prologue Ft. Lauderdale, Florida is a waterfront city that has long been a playground for the rich and famous. Million dollar homes nestle alongside multi-million dollar estates, all of which are built along interconnecting waterways. It is a city where boats number in the tens of thousands. Naturally, such a concentrated abundance of wealth has served to upstart a vast number of waterfront cafes and bars from which party goers and fine diners alike may watch the nightly parade of expensive yachts as they transient the Intracoastal Waterway. It is a parade of affluence and decadence at its finest. The Gold Coast of Florida is an area where wealth goes beyond measurement and is perpetual. There always has been, and always will be, someone bigger and faster—someone with a larger yacht, a faster car, a sleeker jet. The possibilities are directly proportionate to desire and the sky is the limit. Competition is fierce, perhaps even audacious. Yet, that only serves to attract the wealthy. It is a melting pot for the rich. However, for many it has also been their waterloo. Trust Fund Babies—young recipients of inherited fortunes—flock from near and far to jockey into position as potential suitors for devastatingly beautiful women. Those in the know often refer to those beauties as Zoologists. When referred to in this context, a Zoologist is one who is on the hunt for four particular species—a jaguar in her garage, a mink in her closet, a tiger in her bed, and a jackass who will pay for it all without questions asked. Unfortunately, those not in the know must learn. Many a wealthy man has relocated to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to, show them how it is done, only to find himself well laid, but penniless, some three years later. Of course, as with any game of desire, the have nots are always figuring a means to compete with the haves. Enter crime, cons, strippers, smugglers, gambling . . . it would be necessary to update the list daily, for imagination and desire know no holiday. There is but one desire . . . one goal . . . and that desire knows no discrimination whatsoever. In order to compete with the haves one needs nothing more that a burning desire to become a Player. This is a story of some of those Players, so please, read on . . . if you dare!

The Smells And Senses Of Antiquity In The Modern Imagination written by Adeline Grand-Clément and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-16 with History categories.

This volume tackles the role of smell, under-explored in relation to the other senses, in the modern rejection, reappraisal and idealisation of antiquity. Among the senses olfaction in particular has often been overlooked in classical reception studies due to its evanescent nature, which makes this sense difficult to apprehend in its past instantiations. And yet, the smells associated with a given figure or social group convey a rich imagery which in turn connotes specific values: perfumes, scents and foul odours both reflect and mould the ways in which a society thinks or acts. Smells also help to distinguish between male and female, citizens and strangers, and play an important role during rituals. The Smells and Senses of Antiquity in the Modern Imagination focuses on the representation of ancient smells - both enticing and repugnant - in the visual and performative arts from the late 18th century up to the 21st century. The individual contributions explore painting, sculpture, literature and film, but also theatrical performance, museum exhibitions, advertising, television series, historical reenactment and graphic novels, which have all played a part in reshaping modern audiences' perceptions and experiences of the antique.
