The papers in this volume illustrate the interplay between the studies of classical archaeology, religion, history, and musicology. The eight papers by the young scholars and their Nestor, Richard Hamilton, offer a fresh look at various aspects of ancient cult, including the use of the word cult in the academic disciplines of Archaeology and the History of Religion; the introduction of Asklepios to Athens, and a detailed study of the same god's sanctuary on the south slope of Akropolis, where it will be demonstrated that the layout of the early sanctuary on the east terrace was carefully designed after one central monument. The book also contains an innovative study of the Philippeion at Olympia, where it is argued that the tholos with its sculpture was a proto-type for the use of divine images and royal ideology by Hellenistic rulers. Other papers include a statistical approach to the illustration of baskets on Classical votive reliefs, a theoretical study of the role of music in ancient Greek cult, and analysis of the use of the chorus as one of the most important expressions of ancient cult in Sparta.

Stealing Helen written by Lowell Edmunds and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-10-13 with Literary Criticism categories.

It's a familiar story: a beautiful woman is abducted and her husband journeys to recover her. This story’s best-known incarnation is also a central Greek myth—the abduction of Helen that led to the Trojan War. Stealing Helen surveys a vast range of folktales and texts exhibiting the story pattern of the abducted beautiful wife and makes a detailed comparison with the Helen of Troy myth. Lowell Edmunds shows that certain Sanskrit, Welsh, and Old Irish texts suggest there was an Indo-European story of the abducted wife before the Helen myth of the Iliad became known. Investigating Helen’s status in ancient Greek sources, Edmunds argues that if Helen was just one trope of the abducted wife, the quest for Helen’s origin in Spartan cult can be abandoned, as can the quest for an Indo-European goddess who grew into the Helen myth. He explains that Helen was not a divine essence but a narrative figure that could replicate itself as needed, at various times or places in ancient Greece. Edmunds recovers some of these narrative Helens, such as those of the Pythagoreans and of Simon Magus, which then inspired the Helens of the Faust legend and Goethe. Stealing Helen offers a detailed critique of prevailing views behind the "real" Helen and presents an eye-opening exploration of the many sources for this international mythical and literary icon.

The Global Old Age Care Industry written by Vincent Horn and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-14 with Social Science categories.

This book focuses on the emerging global old age care industry developing as a response to tackle the “old age care crisis” in richer countries. In this global industry, multiple actors are involved in recruiting, skilling and placing migrant care workers in different spheres of the receiving country's old age care system. This book delves into the analysis of these actors and the multiple levels influencing their activities. Accordingly, it examines the significance of old age care regimes and policies as well as intermediaries and promoters for initiating, shaping and perpetuating old age care arrangements based on migrant labor and the relationships within them. Particular emphasis is placed on the risks and implications of these arrangements for the well-being and the social protection of the different actors involved. The book analyzes these processes and structures from a global perspective including different countries and regions of the world.

This classic textbook has been used successfully by instructors and students for nearly three decades. This timely new edition offers minimal yet notable changes while retaining all the elements, presentation, and accessible exposition of previous editions. A list of updates is found in the Preface to this edition. This text is based on the author’s experience in teaching graduate courses and the minimal requirements for successful graduate study. The text is understandable to the typical student enrolled in the course, taking into consideration the variations in abilities, background, and motivation. Chapters one through six have been written to be accessible to the average student, w hile at the same time challenging the more talented student through the exercises. Chapters seven through ten assume the students have achieved some level of expertise in the subject. In these chapters, the theorems, examples, and exercises require greater sophistication and mathematical maturity for full understanding. In addition to the standard topics the text includes topics that are not always included in comparable texts. Chapter 6 contains a section on the Riemann-Stieltjes integral and a proof of Lebesgue’s t heorem providing necessary and sufficient conditions for Riemann integrability. Chapter 7 also includes a section on square summable sequences and a brief introduction to normed linear spaces. C hapter 8 contains a proof of the Weierstrass approximation theorem using the method of aapproximate identities. The inclusion of Fourier series in the text allows the student to gain some exposure to this important subject. The final chapter includes a detailed treatment of Lebesgue measure and the Lebesgue integral, using inner and outer measure. The exercises at the end of each section reinforce the concepts. Notes provide historical comments or discuss additional topics.

The Etruscans, whose culture flourished in Italy from the late eighth century B.C.E. to the first century B.C.E, produced some of the most sumptuous bronze and silver mirrors found in the ancient Mediterranean. Mirrors with relief decorations on their reverse sides are extremely rare and uniquely Etruscan. Their designs inform us about artistic styles and supplement our understanding of Etruscan culture and taste. The subjects illustrated on the mirrors give important insights into Etruscan mythology, beliefs, and cultural values, filling the vacuum left by the loss of most of their literary record.
