Le passage de l'apartheid � la d�mocratie en Afrique du Sud en1994 devait donner naissance � une �re nouvelle de paix, de stabilit�et de d�veloppement acc�l�r�. Malgr� un optimisme presque g�n�ral, laviolence politique a cependant persist�. Bien que ne constituant qu'unefraction de celle qui a �t� v�cue sous l'apartheid, son niveau, qui empire,est une indication de la fragilit� potentielle du pays. Elle d�limite enoutre les failles sur lesquelles l'Afrique du Sud peut toujours tr�bucher.La violence politique en Afrique du Sud est principalement due� la pauvret�, � l'in�galit� et au favoritisme politique. Une croissance�conomique limit�e, le manque de capacit�s institutionnelles et despossibilit�s restreintes en mati�re d'�ducation ont engendr� un �tatd�mocratique qui a �t� lent � cr�er des emplois ou � assurer des logements,de l'eau et des services d'assainissement et autres, que bien des Sud-Africains attendaient apr�s l'apartheid. Malgr� une baisse g�n�rale deses niveaux apr�s 1994, la pauvret� demeure � la fois end�mique et aigu�dans tout le pays. Simultan�ment, et encore plus probl�matique pourla stabilit�, l'in�galit� s'est accrue r�guli�rement, laissant une soci�t�divis�e par un gouffre entre une minorit� riche et une majorit� pauvre.Dans ce contexte, la frustration relative � la prestation lente et in�galede services donne souvent lieu � des flamb�es de violence politique.Si une pauvret� et une in�galit� croissantes sont des sources cl�s dem�contentement, la violence politique est d�clench�e par la concurrence� laquelle les ressources financi�res et politique disponibles dans le paysdonnent lieu. Cette concurrence est encore aggrav�e par la perceptionque l'�tat postapartheid est une source d'enrichissement et de pouvoirpersonnels. Au niveau des �lites, l'acc�s � l'�tat permet d'obtenir desavantages personnels et professionnels par la corruption, des faveurspolitiques et des possibilit�s d'affaires gr�ce � des relations �tablies avecdes personnes occupant des postes strat�giques
