Son estos los resultados de una investigación regional desarrollada en el occidente de Cuba que abarca desde la época precolombina hasta la etapa colonial y pone en práctica métodos de la Arqueología, la Etnografía y la Historia. Se concreta a partir de análisis físico-químicos del registro arqueológico que habían permitido constatar la ocurrencia de fenómenos climatológicos muy severos en el archipiélago, en un momento crucial del contacto entre aborígenes e hispanos; eventos estos que ha sido posible enmarcarlos, además, mediante el contraste de dos secuencias cronológicas diferentes: la primera, sobre la base de la cerámica aborigen, que abarca desde el poblamiento de la región por comunidades conocedoras de la agricultura y la alfarería hasta mediados el siglo XVI; y la segunda, en tanto a la cerámica de tradición aborigen en sitios coloniales, desde finales del siglo XVI hasta casi mediados del XVII, en la villa de San Cristóbal de La Habana.

Las luchas armadas que se han desarrollado en Venezuela, Uruguay y Guatemala tienen el rasgo siglo común de haber sido ejemplares por la nitidez y la amplitud de su trayectoria. En ningún otro país estuvo un movimiento clandestino tan cerca de su objetivo: derribar el estado burgués, “Tomar el poder”. Solo en ellos fue posible, en momentos diversos según los casos, a la vista y conocimiento de los hechos reales y no basándose exclusiva- mente en las declaraciones de intenciones, considerar posible el desencadenamiento, por el impacto o la iniciativa de las guerrillas rurales o urbanas, de la “crisis final”: la que pondría fin al poder establecido. Este fue el caso de la guerrilla en Venezuela en 1963, en Guatemala en 1966 y en Uruguay en 1972 (con la preparación por los tupamaros del día “D”). Régis Debray, que ha tenido la suerte, en lo tocante a estos tres procesos, de conocer muchos de los hechos y protagonistas, sea por haber estado en los lugares en momentos decisivos, sea por haber tenido relación con los hombres y algunos de sus preparativos, hace el balance de estas tres experiencias revolucionarias, balances que sólo aspiran a ser documentos que vayan con otros al expediente de una época de luchas sin treguas, una época en que, sin ver llegar el Apocalipsis que esperaba, América Latina vivió algo más que crisis ministeriales. Este esfuerzo de recapitulación y análisis sólo trata de incorporar los sacrificios de ayer a los de hoy; de restablecer en su continuidad la coherencia de las luchas actuales; de contribuir por la organización del recuerdo o la transmisión de una herencia común a una obra capital, incesante y colectiva: salvar del absurdo, de! olvido o, lo que es peor, de la ignorancia, muertes y vidas individuales que por ningún motivo deben volverse vanas.

Latin American Relations with the Middle East surveys the dealings of ten Latin American and Caribbean states – Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Peru, Mexico, Uruguay, and Venezuela – with the Middle East. This volume examins these states' external behavior at both an empirical and conceptual level.
