Since 1914, the French state has faced a succession of daunting and at times almost insurmountable crises. The turbulent decades from 1914 to 1969 witnessed near-defeat in 1914, economic and political crisis in 1926, radical political polarization in the 1930s, military conquest in 1940, the deep division of France during the Nazi Occupation, political reconstruction after 1944, de-colonization (with threatening civil war provoked by the Algerian crisis), and dramatic postwar modernization. However, this tumultuous period was not marked just by crises but also by tremendous change. Economic, social and political "modernization" transformed France in the twentieth century, restoring its confidence and its influence as a leader in global economic and political affairs. This combination of crises and renewal has received surprisingly little attention in recent years. Le Moyen Age central, une ère de désordre et d'anarchie ou, au mieux, une époque où l'ordre social et politique se fonde exclusivement sur la violence et l'oppression ? C'est à un double stéréotype, à une vision trop schématique, que cet ouvrage entend répondre. Tout d'abord, si la Gascogne des XIe et XIIe siècles apparaît à bien des égards originale, elle est loin de constituer un cas atypique dans une Europe traversée par de grandes évolutions d'ensemble. Au-delà de cette démonstration, Hélène Couderc analyse, à la lumière de l'anthropologie juridique, les équilibres et les déséquilibres de la société gasconne, étudie les rapports tissés entre groupes et individus. Il ressort de cette enquête novatrice que, si la violence est effectivement centrale, c'est moins comme un ensemble massif de pratiques brutales que comme une grille d'analyse des relations sociales. Le droit à la violence détermine en effet la place de chacun dans la société. C'est le contrôle de la violence qui fonde la légitimité de l'autorité des princes car, suivant l'idéologie carolingienne ou wisigothique, la paix est au cœur de l'ordre auquel tous contribuent, du réseau nobiliaire local aux comtes et vicomtes dont l'autorité reste forte. Mais, au sein de ces dispositifs complexes de contrôle social, l'ouvrage met aussi en lumière la place étonnante occupée par les "humbles" - plus précisément par une élite paysanne, rien moins que redoutable.
