Une étude nouvelle sur La Diplomatie Française au temps de Louis XIV ne semblait pas s’imposer après les travaux de l’École historique française, de Mignet, de Legrelle, d’Émile Bourgeois, de Pagès et de tant d’autres, auxquels il faut joindre les publications faites à l’étranger ; elle n’aurait point de particulière raison d’être, si le sous-titre que nous avons cru devoir lui donner, Institutions, mœurs et coutumes, n’indiquait l’orientation spéciale de nos recherches et l’idée générale qui les a guidées. Il nous a paru que nos maîtres et devanciers avaient surtout cherché, les uns à retracer les grandes lignes de la politique française au XVIIe siècle, les autres à mettre en lumière certaines périodes mal éclaircies, certains compartiments pour lesquels le dépouillement des textes avait été insuffisant. Quant à la diplomatie de Louis XIV, analysée comme institution, dans ses rapports avec les traditions et les coutumes anciennes, tels que les suit ou les contrecarre l’usage de l’Europe de ce temps, elle n’a point fait l’objet à notre connaissance de travail d’ensemble, mais seulement d’articles fragmentaires 1. Les grandes histoires de France, comme aussi les manuels techniques, décrivent les institutions politiques, administratives, militaires, mais passent sous silence les institutions diplomatiques. Pourtant un nom doit être rappelé au début de cet essai, celui d’Albert Sorel. C’est un prélude admirable à L’Europe et la Révolution française que l’exposé largement esquissé des mœurs politiques de l’Europe sous l’ancien régime. Grande fresque un peu rapide, dans laquelle le XVIIe siècle français n’occupe que quelques pages ! Beaucoup plus restreint et beaucoup plus précis est le sujet que nous nous sommes proposé. Il nécessite l’examen d’un certain nombre de problèmes que Sorel n’a pu qu’effleurer.

In recent generations, the study of dynastic politics and diplomatic history has undergone a revival. This field provides invaluable context for understanding international relations and focuses on aspects of cultural exchange and intellectual currents far more than previously. The “age of Louis XIV” has not been immune from this resurrection of interest in foreign policy and the conduct of diplomacy. This book is the first serious full-length study of Louis XIV’s diplomatic relations with the small states of northern Italy, specifically the duchies of Parma, Modena, and Mantua-Monferrato. Louis’s desire to be seen as a peacemaker (despite his obvious bellicosity) extended to Italy, where he asserted the French crown’s potential as a broker of peace between rival dynasties. But his evident self-interest, and the need to preserve France’s perceived traditional alliance with the House of Savoy, undermined these efforts. He also failed to defend the interests of the dukes of Parma and Modena in their quarrels with the Holy See. After apparent successes in the Franco-Dutch War, Louis believed that he could undermine Spanish influence over the princes of Italy. But his attempts to do so antagonised both the Austrian and Spanish Habsburgs and the Lombardy dukes themselves, resulting in renewed war. Louis XIV and the Peace of Europe analyses diplomatic culture at Versailles and at the small Italian courts, and assesses examples of artistic exchange. It will be valuable reading for undergraduates, graduate students, and historians of the field, as well as for those interested in Louis XIV and Italian culture more generally.
