This French medieval text is now published in its entirety, accompanied by an introduction and extensive synopses in English. Philippe de Mezieres (1327-1405) was a French soldier, publicist and statesman who travelled widely through much of the Christian world and served a number of rulers, particularly the King of Cyprus and Charles V and VI of France. Throughout his life Philippe de Mezieres was obsessed by the ideal that the West must reform itself in the light of the Christian view of the good life and he urged all Christian rulers to join together in a final crusade to liberate the Holy Land and the eastern Christian empires. This is the underlying theme of Le Songe du Vieil Pelerin, Philippe de Mezieres' major work. It is divided into three parts: the first is a wide-ranging survey of the Christian world, the second an examination of the state of France and the third a study of the duties and requirements of authority. The style is highly allegorical but contains much personal observation and historical fact.

This book addresses critical questions and analyses key issues regarding Indigenous/Aboriginal Peoples and governance of land and protected areas in the Arctic. It brings together contributions from scientists, indigenous and non-indigenous researchers, local leaders, and members of the policy community that: document Indigenous/Aboriginal approaches to governance of land and protected areas at the local, regional and international level; explore new territorial governance models that are emerging as part of the Indigenous/Aboriginal governance within Arctic States, provinces, territories and regions; analyse the recognition or lack thereof concerning indigenous rights to self-determination in the Arctic; and examine how traditional decision-making arrangements and practices can be linked with governments in the process of good governance. The book highlights essential lessons learned, success stories, and remaining issues, all of which are useful to address issues of Arctic governance of land and protected areas today, and which could also be relevant for future governance arrangements.

Natural Disasters Cultural Responses written by Christof Mauch and has been published by Lexington Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-03-16 with Nature categories.

Catastrophes, it seems, are becoming more frequent in the twenty-first century. According to UN statistics, every year approximately two hundred million people are directly affected by natural disasters_seven times the number of people who are affected by war. Discussions about global warming and fatal disasters such as Katrina and the Tsunami of 2004 have heightened our awareness of natural disasters and of their impact on both local and global communities. Hollywood has also produced numerous disaster movies in recent years, some of which have become blockbusters. This volume demonstrates that natural catastrophes_earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, etc._have exercised a vast impact on humans throughout history and in almost every part of the world. It argues that human attitudes toward catastrophes have changed over time. Surprisingly, this has not necessarily led to a reduction of exposure or risk. The organization of the book resembles a journey around the globe_from Europe to North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, and from the Pacific through South America and Mexico to the United States. While natural disasters appear everywhere on the globe, different cultures, societies, and nations have adopted specific styles for coping with disaster. Indeed, how humans deal with catastrophes depends largely on social and cultural patterns, values, religious belief systems, political institutions, and economic structures. The roles that catastrophes play in society and the meanings they are given vary from one region to the next; they differ_and this is one of the principal arguments of this book_from one cultural, political, and geographic space to the next. The essays collected here help us to understand not only how people in different times throughout history have learned to cope with disaster but also how humans in different parts of the world have developed specific cultural, social, and technological strategies for doing so.

Conflict In Medieval Europe written by Warren C. Brown and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-15 with History categories.

Conflict is defined here broadly and inclusively as an element of social life and social relations. Its study encompasses the law, not just disputes concerning property, but wider issues of criminality, coercion and violence, status, sex, sexuality and gender, as well as the phases and manifestations of conflict and the behaviors brought to bear on it. It engages, too, with the nature of the transformation spanning the Carolingian period, and its implications for the meanings of power, violence, and peace. Conflict in Medieval Europe represents the 'American school' of the study of medieval conflict and social order. Framed by two substantial historiographical and conceptual surveys of the field, it brings together two generations of scholars: the pioneers, who continue to expand the research agenda; and younger colleagues, who represent the best emerging work on this subject. The book therefore both marks the trajectory of conflict studies in the United States and presents a set of original, highly individual contributions across a shifting conceptual range, indicative of a major transition in the field.

America The Vietnam War And The World written by Andreas W. Daum and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-07-14 with History categories.

Publisher's description: "This book presents new perspectives on the Vietnam War, its global repercussions, and the role of this war in modern history. The volume reveals 'America's War' as an international event that reverberated all over the world: in domestic settings of numerous nation-states, combatants and non-combatants alike, as well as in transnational relations and alliance systems. The volume thereby covers a wide geographical range-from Berkeley and Berlin to Cambodia and Canberra. The essays address political, military, and diplomatic issues no less than cultural and intellectual consequences of 'Vietnam'. The authors also set the Vietnam War in comparison to other major conflicts in world history; they cover over three centuries, and develop general insights into the tragedies and trajectories of military conflicts as phenomena of modern societies in general. For the first time, 'America's War' is thus depicted as a truly global event whose origins and characteristics deserve an interdisciplinary treatment."
