On 26 August 1914 the world-famous university library in the Belgian town of Louvain was looted and destroyed by German troops. The international community reacted in horror - 'Holocaust at Louvain' proclaimed the Daily Mail - and the behaviour of the Germans at Louvain came to be seen as the beginning of a different style of war, without the rules that had governed military conflict up to that point - a more total war, in which enemy civilians and their entire culture were now 'legitimate' targets. Clausewitz and Modern Strategy is the first-ever volume devoted to the influence and interpretation of Clausewitz' On War to be published in the English language. Among all the better-known works on military theory in Western civilization, it is Carl von Clausewitz' magnum opus that has been able to withstand every kind of political, social, economic, and technological change since it first appeared in 1832 and will always remain of more than purely historical interest. Il volume affronta il problema della rappresentazione della guerra in letteratura, e in particolare nella narrativa. L'lntroduzione esamina in che modo la guerra veniva narrata nella letteratura antica, dalla Bibbia a Omero a Cesare, giungendo sino alia Rivoluzione francese. Il capitolo centrale analizza invece il problema della guerra in alcuni grandi romanzi dell'Ottocento (La certosa di Parma, Guerra e pace e La disfatta di Zola), mettendo in rilievo le forti novità rispetto all'epica e alla memorialistica. I romanzi e i diari relativi alla Prima guerra mondiale sono poi confrontati con le 'ideologie della guerra' di fine Ottocento, delle quali costituiscono una tragica smentita. Particolarmente nuova infine la sezione dedicata alla letteratura che si riferisce alla Seconda guerra mondiale. La bibliografia finale, oltre a indicare un'essenziale ma non esigua serie di saggi critici, suggerisce vari percorsi di lettura, adatti a molti livelli didattici. I riferimenti alla letteratura italiana sono sempre ampi, ma il lavoro si distingue per il taglio comparatistico, assai fecondo e chiarificatore. Frequenti sono infine i riferimenti alla tragica attualità della guerra, e al rapporto tra cinema, televisione e letteratura, che, rispetto agli altri due mezzi di rappresentazione, sembra conservare ancora intatto il proprio particolare valore espressivo.
