La "guida" di Mosè Maimonide, la più importante opera del pensiero ebraico medioevale, racchiude al suo interno una parabola che è la più perfetta rappresentazione dei sentieri (spesso interrotti, a volte ciechi, quasi sempre stimolanti) che portano chi vuole scegliere la filosofia come stile di vita verso la meta agognata. Scrive Maimonide: «Inizio il discorso di questo capitolo con una metafora che ho inventato per te. Dico dunque che il re è nel suo castello e tutti i suoi sudditi sono alcuni in città e alcuni fuori». Di quelli che si trovano in città, alcuni voltano del tutto le spalle al palazzo del re. Altri invece vogliono sì dirigersi verso il palazzo per comparire al suo cospetto, ma sono ancora così lontani che neppure sono in grado di scorgere le mura. Ma anche per coloro che sono riusciti a raggiungere l'ingresso della regale dimora, la situazione non è certo particolarmente rosea: chi può dire se riusciranno a trovare la maniera di farsi ricevere in modo da vedere il re e ascoltare le sue parole, il suo prezioso messaggio?

«Buona parte dei dubbi nelle menti dei perfetti concernono la ricerca del fine di questa esistenza, per stabilire quale esso sia», scrive Mosè Maimonide nella terza parte della sua Guida. Per Mosè Maimonide, fine esegeta della parola di Dio e di Aristotele, ma anche lucido e spiccio risolutore di falsi inghippi metafisici, il problema "qual è il senso dell'esistenza" semplicemente è un falso problema. «Ora spiegherò come questa questione non si ponga, secondo tutte le dottrine» scrive Maimonide. Un deciso invito al lettore a non prendersi troppo sul serio, in quanto puntino dell'immenso universo, o come direbbe Maimonide citando la Bibbia «un verme», «un bruco», «la goccia di un secchio», lo si trova in questi passi della Guida che si prendono gioco della nostra, tanto comune, tendenza a universalizzare piccoli crucci e grandi dolori: «Ogni ignorante immagina che l'esistenza intera sia in funzione della propria individualità, come se non esistesse altro che lui; pertanto, se accade una cosa che è contraria a ciò che egli vuole, egli afferma decisamene che tutto ciò che esiste è male».

The Guide for the Perplexed (Hebrew: Moreh Nevuchim, Arabic: dalalat al ha'irin) is one of the major works of Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon, better known as Maimonides, or the Rambam. It is the main source of his philosophical views. The main purpose of the work is to expound on Maaseh Bereishit and Maaseh Merkavah (the sections of Jewish mysticism dealing with Creation from Genesis and the passage of the Chariot from Ezekiel), these being the two main mystical texts in the Tanakh.
