Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas (Cuéllar, 1549 - Madrid, 1626), cronista, historiador y escritor prolífico del Siglo de Oro, es autor, entre otras obras, de la Historia general de los hechos de los castellanos en las Islas y Tierra Firme del mar Océano o Décadas, considerada una de las primeras "Historias de América", principalmente de los descubrimientos y conquistas. Fue Cronista Mayor de Castilla y de Indias. Está considerado el historiador de temática más amplia en su época. Entre su abundante obra sobresale esta Historia General del Mundo en tiempos de Felipe II, que Mariano Cuesta Domingo, catedrático de Historia de los Descubrimientos Geográficos y Geografía de América, facilita al lector preparando esta edición por primera vez, cuatro siglos después de que concluyera Herrera y sus impresores la de Madrid y la de Valladolid. Esta Historia fue concebida por Herrera como crónica, anuario, del reinado de Felipe II el Prudente desde su comienzo, de cada uno de los años, hasta el año de 1598, que passo a mejor vida. Para ello, el profesor Cuesta efectúa en el volumen primero de esta obra una semblanza del autor, de su trayectoria vital, de su producción y de su contexto histórico; los volúmenes II a IV son una reproducción facsímil de la primera edición, la de Madrid de 1601-1612 (años 1559-1598) aunque indicando la complementariedad que añade en la edición de Valladolid (1554-1559).
