Dentro de la literatura española del s. XIX, quizá sea la guerra contra los franceses uno de los episodios que más atención ha recibido. Más adelante, en el s. XX el interés suscitado por los acontecimientos de 1808 fue sustituido por otros más recientes, la Guerra Civil. No obstante, quedaban rescoldos de la primera: la identificación del guerrillero con el miliciano o el paralelismo de la invasión francesa con la llegada de las tropas extranjeras son dos ejemplos. La autora justifica en este libro cómo la Guerra de la Independencia no sólo se vivió entre 1880 y 1814, sino que se ha recreado a lo largo de dos siglos y se ha reinterpretado, y se reinterpreta, para entender el presente.
