Leurs sources n'ont cessé de se multiplier, au point d'en faire un des adversaires les plus redoutables des démocraties libérales contemporaines. Certes, comme le rappelle Jean Delumeau, la peur est de tout temps. Si l'affect qu'elle représente connaît son déploiement le plus varié dans le cœur et l'esprit de l'homme, ses formes et ses défis se renouvellent de génération en génération. Aujourd'hui, ses objets et moyens de propagande sont d'une complexité et d'une ampleur inédites. Quant à sa gestion, elle est des plus problématiques : la confiance moderne dans la gestion scientifique des risques et des menaces est fortement ébranlée depuis le milieu du siècle dernier. En sorte qu'il n'est pas exagéré de dire qu'un des enjeux majeurs de nos sociétés est d'assurer en même temps la gestion éclairée des peurs et le contrôle social de ce qui est censé y remédier : les compétences. D'où les deux grands axes d'interrogation pris en charge par les leçons publiques organisées par l'École des sciences philosophiques et religieuses les années académiques 2003-2004 et 2004-2005. Le premier, « De quoi avons-nous peur ? », concerne l'investigation de la spécificité des peurs contemporaines ; le second, « La peur bonne ou mauvaise conseillère ? », a trait aux modes de gestion qui en sont proposés aujourd'hui.

Passion and Action explores the place of the emotions in seventeenth-century understandings of the body and mind, and the role they were held to play in reasoning and action. Interest in the passions pervaded all areas of philosophical enquiry, and was central to the theories of many major figures, including Hobbes, Descartes, Malebranche, Spinoza, Pascal, and Locke. Yet little attention has been paid to this topic in studies of early modern thought. Susan James surveys the inheritance of ancient and medieval doctrines about the passions, then shows how these were incorporated into new philosophical theories in the course of the seventeenth century. She examines the relation of the emotions to will, knowledge, understanding, desire, and power, offering fresh analyses and interpretations of a broad range of texts by little-known writers as well as canonical figures, and establishing that a full understanding of these authors must take account of their discussions of our affective life. Passion and Action also addresses current debates, particularly those within feminist philosophy, about the embodied character of thinking and the relation between emotion and knowledge. This ground-breaking study throws new light upon the shaping of our ideas about the mind, and provides a historical context for burgeoning contemporary investigations of the emotions.

This book offers a novel and comprehensive interpretation of Descartes’s moral philosophy. In contrast to other influential interpretations, the book argues that the central tenet of his ethical thought is that each person ought to live in the way that is most conducive to their degree of overall perfection. While Descartes’s ethical thought has attracted only a very modest amount of attention among scholars, this book demonstrates that it constitutes an important and integral component of his philosophical project as a whole. It argues that Descartes’s ethics constitutes a form of moral perfectionism. In the Cartesian picture, we satisfy this requirement of perfection by using our free will well in all our conduct, something which is also necessary for obtaining happiness for ourselves. To be guaranteed happiness, however, we need to acquire the virtue of generosity, which, besides a habit of using one’s free will well, entails a habit of being attentive in one’s thought to various truths about oneself and about the world we live in. Descartes offers an interesting attempt to make living well depend entirely on ourselves and not on fate or fortune. He also leaves room for the presence of passions within such a life and for acknowledging that even fully virtuous persons’ lives may differ in their degrees of overall perfection. Descartes’s Moral Perfectionism will appeal to scholars and graduate students working on Descartes, the history of early modern philosophy, and the history of ethics.
