Par son constant dépassement, sa quête d’un feu central, d’un élément non décomposable, l’activité poétique de Char – « métier de pointe » l’appelle-t-il à dessein – continue de tracer son patient — mais brûlant — sillon dans le champ de la littérature. Et au-delà sans doute. Entré tôt en poésie, passager du Surréalisme, c’est au cœur provençal de L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue que René Char puise les enjeux de son écriture, à l’aune d’un double mouvement : retrait et avènement du réel. Sa manière poétique vise l’indicible, la pureté du trait, et les atteint dans l’éblouissement et la fureur. Âme saisie, raison insurgée, voilà ce que confirment ici, avec Serge Velay, tous les grands lecteurs de Char, de Bataille à Blanchot. Cet essai ne propose donc des clefs à son œuvre, que dans la mesure où celle-ci est déjà ouverte, fragmentaire : à toi, lecteur, d’établir les rapports. L’auteur des Matinaux tient son maquis, au sens propre dans la Résistance, et figuré par son fructueux commerce avec les Présocratiques, Heidegger ou les peintres contemporains, ses « alliés substantiels ». Demander quel homme fut plus poète, rend mal compte de sa place ; plutôt : quel poète fut plus homme ? Hâte-toi de transmettre ta part de merveilleux, de rébellion, de bienfaisance.

Quand j'ai écrit Arsenal, je n'avais que dix-sept ans et je ne savais même pas que le surréalisme existait. Set in a fictitious Mediterranean port city, The Opposing Shore is the first-person account of a young aristocrat sent to observe the activities of a naval base. The fort lies at the country's border; at its feet is the bay of Syrtes. Across the bay is territory of the enemy who has, for three hundred years, been at war with the narrator's countrymen; the battle has become a complex, tacit game in which no actions are taken and no peace declared. As the narrator comes to understand, everything depends upon a boundary, unseen but certain, separating the two sides. Besides the narrator there are two other main characters, the dark and laconic captain of the base and a woman whose compex relations to both sides of the war brings the narator deeper into the story's web. For many French readers The Opposing Shore (published as Le rivage des Syrtes ), with its theme of transgressions and boundaries, spoke to the issue of defeat and the desire to fail: a paticularly sensitive motif in postwar French literature. But there is nothing about the novel tying it either to France or to the 1950s; in fact, Gracq's novel, with its elaborate, richly detailed prose, will be of greater interest now than at any point in the last twenty years.
