La sombría y fantasmal Edimburgo como emblemático escenario, por donde Psyque Zenobia deambula en busca de inspiración, con su perrita Diana y su criado negro Pompeyo, a través de los delirantes renglones del último cuento, «Una malaventura», escrito con desfachatez posmoderna, que bien podría constituir un adecuado epílogo y una despiadada respuesta a la pregunta de ¿Qué lugar ocupa la mujer en los cuentos de Poe?... Gonzalo Suárez. Autor: Edgar Poe nació en Boston el 19 de enero de 1809 era hijo de actores ambulantes, y cuando se quedó huérfano fue adoptado por la familia Allan. Este hecho cambió su trayectoria vital y le proporcionó el acceso a la cultura a la vez que una vida de relaciones atormentadas. La obra de Edgar Allan Poe representa la transformación del relato breve, género que a partir de él alcanza una dimensión literaria nueva. Cultivó también el ensayo literario y la poesía, y su figura marca de forma indeleble la literatura posterior. El culto a Poe se inició en Francia a mediados del siglo XIX. Los simbolistas franceses le consideraron su maestro; Baudelaire tradujo su obra al francés, y Mallarmé —que le dedicó uno de sus más bellos sonetos— le consideró “el príncipe espiritual de la época”. Vivió siempre acosado por la pobreza y obligado por ella a ejecutar tareas que malgastaban su energía creadora. Murió en Baltimore el 7 de octubre de 1849.
