Hombre honesto, cuando no le gusta un poeta, lo confiesa sin rodeos: " En los poetas, la naturalidad es el más hermoso atractivo; y no hallado en Góngora sino oscuridad, las veces que le he leído me ha dejado muy cansado " (Discurso apologético). La doctrina que Luzán imbuye a los jóvenes es doblemente clásica, pues viene fundamentada sobre el clasicismo grecolativno a la vez que sobre el clasicismo español, sin que deje de tomar en cuenta el pensamiento poético de otras naciones modernas, merced a lo cual nos da la más cosmopolita y la más erudita de todas las artes poéticas.
