Qu'est ce que l'islam ?Que doit cette religion à la prédication de Mahomet ? Au fil de ma lecture du Coran, de la biographie de Mahomet, de la découverte du discours musulman et de mes discussions avec des musulmans, je n'ai jamais pu me départir d'un sentiment de malaise et d'incompréhension vis à vis de ce qui m'apparaissait comme les contradictions de cette religion. Pour tâcher de les expliquer, j'ai cherché à en savoir davantage sur ses origines historiques. J'ai découvert ainsi le travail du Père Edouard-Marie Gallez, docteur en théologie et histoire des religions, et que je l'ai rencontré. Sa thèse, intitulée Le Messie et son Prophète, et nos échanges m'ont fait découvrir quantité de recherches historiques passionnantes. Elles ont transformé ma vision de l'islam en me révélant une tout autre histoire que celle que le discours ambiant veut faire croire : l'islam n'est pas le résultat d'une révélation divine - ou de la prédication de Mahomet - mais celui d'un processus très long et très complexe de réécriture de l'Histoire, s'enracinant dans des croyances juives et chrétiennes dévoyées, et manipulé par les califes pour satisfaire leurs visées de domination politique. Cette découverte restait encore à ce jour quasi inconnue du public. La faute sans doute à la complexité du sujet et à son caractère très sensible qui l'ont confiné dans les cercles très restreints de la recherche. Comment alors la rendre accessible au plus grand nombre ? Comment l'expliquer et la replacer dans une perspective historique ? Comment les travaux les plus récents ont-ils pu la confirmer ? C'est ce à quoi j'espère contribuer avec le Grand secret de l'islam, fruit d'une longue recherche personnelle et de ma collaboration avec Edouard-Marie Gallez. Au monde de découvrir maintenant quel est le « grand secret » de l'islam.

Islam in Spanish Literature is a sweeping reinterpretation of Spanish literature, taking as its given the enormous debt to Arab culture that Spain incurred through the eight centuries of Islamic presence on the Iberian Peninsula. This volume takes up the thread of the work of the Arabist Miguel Asín Palacios, the first to comment extensively upon the marked Islamic features in many Spanish classics. After an initial survey of the presence of Islam and Judaism in Spanish history and culture, succeeding chapters explore the Muslim context of Juan Ruiz, the author of the Libro de buen amor; St John of the Cross; St Teresa de Jesus; the anonymous sonnet "No me mueve, mi Dios"; aljamiado-morisco literature and then "official" Moorophile literature, standing in such dramatic contrast to one another; and last, the novelist Juan Goytisolo, who, writing today, continues to reflect upon the impact of the East on Spanish culture. It is no exaggeration to state that this book redefines the ground of the study of Spanish literature; it will be hard for the contemporary reader ever again to read it with innocence, as a literature exclusively "European."

The codex Parisino-petropolitanus is one of the earliest witnesses of the handwritten transmission of the Qurʾanic text which has survived to this day. The various fragments which were part of the original manuscript are scattered among various collections; once put together, they provide a unique picture of the state of the text during the 7th century (orthography and textual peculiarities) and of the circumstances in which the canonical version as we know it today took shape physically. The present study, first of its kind, paves the way for a more accurate understanding of the beginning of Islam, based on a significant document, and of the evolution of the Qurʾan during that period. Le codex Parisino-petropolitanus est l'un des plus anciens témoins de la transmission manuscrite du texte du Coran qui aient été conservés. Ses différents fragments sont dispersés entre plusieurs collections; une fois mis ensemble, ils donnent un aperçu unique sur l'état du texte au 7e siècle (orthographe et particularités textuelles) et sur les conditions dans lesquelles s'est organisée matériellement la constitution de la version canonique telle que nous la connaissons. Encompassing the whole milieu of early Islamic civilization, this major work of Western orientalism explores the meaning of the life and teaching of the tenth-century mystic and martyr, al-Hallaj. With profound spiritual insight and transcultural sympathy, Massignon, an Islamicist and scholar of religion, penetrates Islamic mysticism in a way that was previously unknown. Massignon traveled throughout the Middle East and western India to gather and authenticate al-Hallaj's surviving writings and the recorded facts. After assembling the extant verses and prose works of al-Hallaj and the accounts of his life and death, Massignon published La Passion d'al-Hallaj in 1922. At his death in 1962, he left behind a greatly expanded version, published as the second French edition (1975). It is edited and translated here from the French and the Arabic sources by Massignon's friend and pupil, Herbert Mason. Volume 1 gives an account of al-Hallaj's life and describes the wo rld in which he lives; volume 2 traces his influence in Islam over the centuries; volume 3 studies Hallajian thought; volume 4 contains a full biography and index.
