Il fine principale di questo lavoro è riesaminare la letteratura pubblicata in URSS durante l’epoca brežneviana (1964-'84). Bollata come insignificante e poco interessante, rapidamente dimenticata dopo la sua conclusione, si tratta, in realtà, di un periodo di silenzioso cambiamento della società. Questi mutamenti non tardano a riflettersi su parte consistente della letteratura ufficiale che, sempre più spesso, pur restando nell’ambito dell’ideologicamente e del politicamente accettabile, non si esime dal confrontarsi con le questioni più scomode del tempo. Tommaso Campanella (1568-1639) is one of the most fascinating, if hitherto inaccessible, intellectuals of the Italian Renaissance. His work ranges across many of the intellectual, ecclesiastical, and political concerns of that tumultuous era. John Headley uses Campanella's life and works to open a window into this complex period. He not only explicates the frequently contradictory texts of a prolific author but also situates Campanella's writings amidst the larger currents of European thought. For all its obscurely magical and astrolgocial intricacies, Campanella's entire intellectual endeavor expresses an effort to impose a distinctive order and direction upon the major issues and forces of the age different from that which was shortly to prevail with the new Galilean science and the Leviathan state. Prendendo spunto dal commento e dall’analisi di alcuni dei sermoni contenuti nel Vercelli Book (Vercelli, Biblioteca Capitolare, ms. CXVII; seconda metà del secolo X), il volume è una introduzione ad alcuni aspetti stilistici e contenutistici dell’omiletica anonima in lingua inglese antica. Prodotto di uno scriptorium insulare non di facile individuazione, il Vercelli Book costituisce un interessante esempio di miscellanea di testi in prosa e in versi di carattere religioso: all’interno di tale raccolta, un peso primario assume un nucleo di sermoni dal forte impianto escatologico, frutto del riutilizzo e della rilettura di materiali parimenti tratti dalla tradizione latina cristiana, da quella iberno-insulare così come da quella pre-cristiana. Testi che per strutture compositive appaiono in continuità rispetto alla tradizione latina dell’omiletica composita, i sermoni escatologici vercellesi risentono in maniera chiara dell’influsso latino e irlandese, così come della forte componente ritmica tanto pregnante in ambito iberno-insulare. Proprio tale propensione verso un incedere ritmato, presente in buona parte della letteratura religiosa anonima inglese antica, appare prodromo di quella prosa allitterante che costituisce elemento portante dell’omiletica dei due grandi predicatori del tardo periodo Anglosassone: Ælfric e Wulfstan. I sermoni vercellesi risultano in questo senso utile elemento di analisi dell’evoluzione del genere omiletico in ambito insulare nei secoli X e XI, così come importante strumento di lettura della funzione pratica del codice che li contiene. E, insieme a esso, dell’ambito culturale che li ha prodotti.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti nasce nel 1919 a Yonkers, New York, da padre italiano e madre di origini franco-portoghesi. È poeta, romanziere, traduttore, editore, pittore, autore di teatro e drammi radiofonici. Anima della San Francisco Renaissance, che negli anni 50 stravolge le convenzioni letterarie e sociali del tempo, Ferlinghetti è da allora protagonista di una intensa attività creativa, mai disgiunta da una profonda attenzione a tematiche politiche, sociali ed ecologiche. Fondatore assieme a Pete D. Martin della famosa City Lights Bookstore, Ferlinghetti ha sempre compiuto scelte editoriali coraggiose, come la pubblicazione di “Urlo” di Allen Ginsberg, vero manifesto della beat generation, per la quale viene accusato di vendita e distribuzione di materiale osceno: il noto processo del 1956 termina con una storica vittoria legale contro la censura. Negli anni ha partecipato a numerosi festival e reading di poesia, tra i quali quelli storici alla Royal Albert Hall di Londra (1965), a Castelporziano (1978), ad Amsterdam (1981), dimostrandosi viaggiatore instancabile e artista sempre attento alla difesa degli ultimi e del pianeta. Ha esposto le proprie opere pittoriche in diversi musei e gallerie sia negli Stati Uniti che in Europa. Insignito nel 1998 del titolo di primo Poeta Laureato della città di San Francisco, Ferlinghetti ha ricevuto svariati riconoscimenti, tra cui recentemente quello di Commendatore al merito della Repubblica Italiana. Il suo “A Coney Island of the Mind” tradotto in decine di lingue, è tra i libri di poesia più letti al mondo con oltre un milione di copie stampate.

Computers have become omnipresent in recent decades, affecting all aspects of modern life and influencing creative pursuits in art, architecture, music, and film. One consequence of this seemingly irreversible trend is its effect on the perception of the aesthetic object, and indeed of nature itself. Dawn of a New Feeling acknowledges that computers have become a formidable tool for creating new and entertaining art forms, while contending that virtual reality is not conducive to meditations on the aesthetic object. Virtual or augmented reality, Raffaele Milani argues, is illusory and blunts the viewer’s capacity for feeling a genuine connection with a work of art. First describing how modernity and post-modernity are entangled with virtual reality, engendering linguistic and anthropological confusion in which art seems to have lost its meaning, Milani then contrasts these developments with classical art forms and reflects on the ways in which traditional art objects stimulate an appreciation of nature, which, upon contemplation, appears as an aesthetic object itself. The saturation of our culture by mass media, he argues, can give rise to a renewed desire to experience a more intimate communication with nature. By identifying reading, contemplation, and care for nature as activities that help us to escape the mental atrophy of a web-dominated world and find refuge from the chaos of virtual mediation, Dawn of a New Feeling offers a reinterpretation of contemplative approaches to appreciating aesthetics and to understanding the profound nature of artistic vision.
