Prescrite par une ordonnance royale de 1841, la publication du « Catalogue général des manuscrits des bibliothèques publiques de France » représentait, en 1975, avec 59 volumes, la quasi-totalité des fonds anciens hérités des grandes collections de l'Ancien Régime. Toutes les raisons qui ont conduit, depuis un siècle et demi, à poursuivre cet immense travail de catalogage général sont comme redoublées aujourd'hui, par les obligations de conservation et de mise en valeur scientifique du patrimoine culturel de la nation et, singulièrement, du patrimoine écrit. Ainsi, depuis 1980, les volumes publiés font connaître les fonds qui n'avaient fait l'objet d'aucun catalogue, et les enrichissements qui nécessitaient un supplément. La Direction du Livre et de la Lecture, au ministère chargé de la Culture, a repris cette publication depuis 1979. De 1979 à 1988, elle a mené ce travail en collaboration avec le CNRS. C'est dans ce cadre, que l'Institut de recherche et d'histoire des textes a assuré, en liaison avec les conservateurs des bibliothèques concernées, la mise au point et l'édition des volumes élaborés durant cette période.

Most marketing scholars implicitly consider independent merchants as conservative and passive actors, and study the modernization of retailing via department stores, chains and supermarkets. In this innovative study, Franck Cochoy challenges this perspective and takes a close look at the transformation of commerce through the lens of Progressive Grocer, an American trade magazine launched in 1922. Aimed at modernizing small independent grocery stores, Progressive Grocer sowed the seeds for modern self-service which spread in small retail outlets, sometimes well before the advent of the large retail spaces which are traditionally viewed as the origin of the self-service economy. The author illustrates how this publication had a highly influential role on what the trade considered to be best practice and shaped what was considered to be cutting edge. By displacing the consumer and their agency from the centre of analytic attention, this innovative book highlights the complex impact of social, technical and retailing environment factors that structure and delimit consumer freedom in the marketplace.
