L'homme lui-meme n' en est qu' un agent, agent principal sans doute, grande roue de la machine, mais qui subit les reactions et transmet les mouvements des autres parties du mecanisme general. Ces autres parties, c'est dans la nature physique, dans les regnes orga nique ci inorganique, qu'il faut les aller chercher. Les influences dues aux actions exterieures qui entourent l'homme et le dominent d'autant plus qu'il est moins civilise, donnent naissance aux conditions sous l'empire desquelles, chaque race, chaque individu grandit et se developpe. On ne saurait donc ecrire l'histoire, sans tenir compte de ces elements primordiaux, qui ont preside a la formation du globe, a la naissance des etres et a ce qu'on pourrait appeler la gestation de l'humanite. Voila pourquoi j'ai pense que presenter un apercu de l'histoire des pre miers hommes, des premieres societes, dans ses rapports avec le globe ou le Createur les a fixes, c'etait offrir la meilleure introduction aux annales des nations et a l'histoire des individus.
