Excerpt from Nature Pictures by American Poets The editor's aim in this compilation has been to select, from the works of representative American poets, certain pictures of nature, either vignettes of specific objects or broad landscape effects. There has been a hope that the book might aid in nature study and might foster aesthetic observation and culture. The selections are all taken from authors of high literary rank, with the desire to promote among the younger students a further acquaintance with con temporaneous poets, and, at the same time, to recall familiarly certain classic American poems of description and narration. Doubtless the selections disclose sins of commission and of omission. The editor deeply regrets the ah sence of poems by Sidney Lanier, since satisfactory arrangements could not be made with his publishers. In the introduction, however, tribute has been paid to the poet's sensitive and melodious nature pictures. Excerpt from Arcadian Days: American Landscapes in Nature and Art Cold types and rebellious pigments alike are inadequate means of expression. The simplest rustic subjects have seemed the best, because they are the most familiar. It is hoped that some of these sketches may appeal by their truthfulness to the reader's pleasant memories. But the whole value of the work, if it has any value, lies in its tendency, in what it merely hints at, the great desirability, for in stance, Of using one's own eyes and of cultivat ing one's powers of observation; for how much of pleasure and profit this might add to the lives of most people, no matter in what particular sphere of action they may be placed! Excerpt from The Landscape: Didactic Poem, in Three Books, Addressed to Uvedale Price, Esq. Mr. Repton himself, he concluded, had too much know ledge Of business, to pretend to any exclusive right Of property in a plan or manuscript which he had delivered to another, and received payment for; and it is not with out the utmost astonishment that he finds an expression in his Letter to Mr. Price implying the an apology was due to any one, it was to his employer, the owner Of the place, and purchaser Of the plan and manuscript; but as he had consented to its being placed in a bookseller's shop, to be subscribed for, it seemed to be as fairly and fully laid Open to criticism as any one Of his family pictures would be, should he place them in the shop Of a printseller, and open a public subscrip tion for engravings to be made after them. Excerpt from Landscape in Poetry From Homer to Tennyson: With Many Illustrative Examples Yet thus only, as a rule, can any fair portion of the original tone and colour be preserved. Almost every verse translator is inevitably tempted to import modern, romantic, detail and feeling into classical poetry. And even where the aim has been at literal accuracy, the difference in sentiment with which the ancient and modern worlds have regarded Nature is so fine and subtle, that it proves apt to evaporate under metrical necessities. A few translations in verse, however, are included for the sake of relief when they seemed sufficiently close to retain some part of the authentic quality. It is simply as Literature that the Greek and Roman poets, with those who follow, have been here regarded. Philological questions, with the influence of national History over Poetry, lie beyond my scope. But so far as I may have succeeded in this effort it will meet the wish expressed by Matthew Arnold in one of his letters, that a somewhat considerable body of Greek and Latin literature should be so rendered as to make it accessible to readers, anxious for some familiarity with the literature of those great languages which they have studied but little. The original texts have uniformly been subjoined (except in case of Hebrew, Celtic, and Anglo-Saxon quotations), in the hope that the book may thus gain an interest for a larger body of readers.
