For many people, Tyninghame on the beautiful East Lothian coast means beaches, sea birds and salt marshes. But this place on the southern boundary of the Firth of Forth was once an important monastic site, the burial place of St Baldred and later a bishop's palace that eventually became the seat of the earls of Haddington. In the early eighteenth century, its landscape was dramatically changed by a young woman, Lady Helen Hope and her husband, Thomas Hamilton, 6th Earl of Haddington. The church, the house, the gardens and surroundings have undergone many transformations since they lived here, but somehow their vision has remained intact and unspoiled. Judy Riley reveals a fascinating story, weaving together the different threads – archaeological, historical, religious and horticultural – which make up this special place in a corner of East Lothian.

Hong Kong written by Caroline Knowles and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-12-15 with Social Science categories.

In 1997 the United Kingdom returned control of Hong Kong to China, ending the city’s status as one of the last remnants of the British Empire and initiating a new phase for it as both a modern city and a hub for global migrations. Hong Kong is a tour of the city’s postcolonial urban landscape, innovatively told through fieldwork and photography. Caroline Knowles and Douglas Harper’s point of entry into Hong Kong is the unusual position of the British expatriates who chose to remain in the city after the transition. Now a relatively insignificant presence, British migrants in Hong Kong have become intimately connected with another small minority group there: immigrants from Southeast Asia. The lives, journeys, and stories of these two groups bring to life a place where the past continues to resonate for all its residents, even as the city hurtles forward into a future marked by transience and transition. By skillfully blending ethnographic and visual approaches, Hong Kong offers a fascinating guide to a city that is at once unique in its recent history and exemplary of our globalized present.

Living Landscapes written by Christopher Key Chapple and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-01 with Religion categories.

In Living Landscapes, Christopher Key Chapple looks at the world of ritual as enacted in three faiths of India. He begins with an exploration of the relationship between the body and the world as found in the cosmological cartography of Sāṃkhya philosophy, which highlights the interplay between consciousness (puruṣa) and activity (prakṛti), a process that gives rise to earth, water, fire, air, and space. He then turns to the progressive explication of these five great elements in Buddhism, Jainism, Advaita, Tantra, and Haṭha Yoga, and includes translations from the Vedas and the Purāṇas of Hinduism, the Buddhist and Jain Sūtras, and select animal fables from early Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Chapple also describes his own pilgrimages to the Great Stupa at Shambhala Mountain Center in Colorado, the five elemental temples (pañcamahābhūta mandir) in south India, and the Jaina cosmology complex in Hastinapur. An appendix with practical instructions that integrate Yoga postures with meditative reflections on the five elements is included.

Living Landscapes written by Andy Rouse and has been published by Argentum Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Habitat (Ecology) categories.

'Living Landscapes' builds upon the success of Andy Rouse' s Concepts of Nature (ISBN 978 1 902538 52 5), using stunning artistic images combined with thought-provoking essays to illustrate the relationships between animals and the fragile environments in which they live. Using award-winning wide-angle techniques, abstracts and some very creative usage of light and motion, Andy Rouse shows why he is one of the best and most creative wildlife photographers in the world. Themed portfolios explore the concepts of wilderness, dimensions and dark light whilst galleries show Rouse' s stunning project work on snow geese, the wildebeest migration and the Galapagos Islands. The essays that introduce each chapter show Rouse' s passion for the natural world and seek not only to question but also to inspire. In a final chapter which takes the form of an in-depth interview, Rouse explores the sources of his vision and explains the way in which he tries to tell a story through his images. Aspects of Nature is a must-read for anyone who is passionate about nature and loves photography as the ultimate art form of self-expression. Andy Rouse' s Concepts of Nature was published by Argentum in spring 2008 and he has previously published some dozen books on photography and natural history, including Penguin Life. He writes regularly for a number of photography magazines, lectures (often together with another Argentum author, Joe Cornish), and has appeared in television programmes for the BBC, ITV, Carlton, Meridian and NBC.
