In the aftermath of major violent events that affect many, we seek to know the ‘truth’ of what happened. Whatever ‘truth’ emerges relies heavily on the extent to which any text about a given event can stir our emotions – whether such texts are official sources or the ‘voice of the people’, we are more inclined to believe them if their words make us feel angry, sad or ashamed. If they fail to stir emotion, however, we will often discount them even when the reported information is the same. Victoria Carpenter analyses texts by the Mexican government, media and populace published after the Tlatelolco massacre of 2 October 1968, demonstrating how there is no strict division between their accounts of what happened and that, in fact, different sides in the conflict used similar and sometimes the same images and language to rouse emotions in the reader.

In contrast with the central arguments of the event structure, which have been extensively studied, much less attention has been given to non-arguments. To bridge this gap, the present volume focuses on prepositional and adverbial phrases expressing instrumental, causal, spatial, temporal roles and the like, i.e. semantic roles which have been typically associated with oblique case. The various contributions show that case in general, and oblique case in particular, is at the intersection between form and meaning: at issue are the nuclear versus non-nuclear status of these phrases and the semantic roles they express. The import of these phrases on the event structure is described in a functional-cognitive perspective for Cora, Nyulnyul, German, Dutch, French and Spanish. The specific analyses of empirical phenomena presented in this volume, as well as their implications for linguistic theory in general, will be of interest for scholars interested in syntax, semantics and pragmatics. This is the sixth and final volume of the Case and Grammatical Relations across Languages project.

El Miércoles de Ceniza de 1950, varios vecinos de Albanchez (Almería) desafiaron la prohibición de celebrar el carnaval escenificando el “entierro de la sardina”. Disfrazados de sacerdotes y monaguillos, se lanzaron a la calle. Allí se les fueron uniendo otros muchachos, mujeres y niños, y se formó espontáneamente un grupo que fue recorriendo el pueblo, pero al llegar a la calle General Mola, la Guardia Civil los disolvió a base de bofetadas y golpes con la porra. Según las autoridades, uno de ellos portaba un palo de escoba en el que había colocado un calabazón que simulaba una cruz. Además, aseguraban haber escuchado entre la multitud “palabras propias de un sacerdote al verificar un funeral”. A partir de estas evidencias, interpretaron los hechos como una mofa hacia la religión. Pequeños sucesos como este permiten que nos adentremos en el franquismo “realmente” vivido. Con ello se pretende examinar, a través de las experiencias cotidianas de aquellos cuyas existencias transcurrieron bajo la dictadura, las complejas e incluso contradictorias percepciones que suscitaron las políticas del régimen entre la gente de a pie y mostrar cómo la atracción popular por determinados aspectos del franquismo coexistió durante todo el periodo con la resistencia frente a otros.
