Nel 1959 Charles P. Snow tenne la sua ormai famosa Rede Lecture all'Università di Cambridge, sul tema de Le due culture (libro pubblicato da Feltrinelli nel 1964), una riflessione sull'accademia basata sul presupposto che esistessero due soli tipi di cultura: le arti e le discipline umanistiche, da una parte, e le scienze naturali, dall'altra. Da allora, tuttavia, è emersa una terza cultura, generalmente detta delle “scienze sociali”, che comprende discipline come la sociologia, l'antropologia, la scienza politica, l'economia e la psicologia, e che è cresciuta di importanza. Il libro di Jerome Kagan si propone dunque di descrivere gli assunti, il vocabolario, le formae mentis, i contributi e i limiti di ciascuna di queste culture. Fa emergere le differenze tra i significati di molti dei concetti usati da ognuna nel proprio campo e non immediatamente trasferibili ad altri, passa in rassegna i vari criteri di indagine e i risultati conseguiti nella ricerca della verità, evidenzia gli apporti dati anche dalle scienze sociali e dalle discipline umanistiche alla nostra comprensione della natura umana e mette in discussione il diritto di predominio di una delle tre culture sulle altre, come è successo alle scienze naturali con i grandi investimenti in fisica, chimica e biologia molecolare. L'obiettivo è quello di ristabilire un equilibrio tra i rispettivi campi della conoscenza, con le conseguenze teoriche ma anche pratiche che questo comporta. “È tempo,” dice Kagan, “che i membri delle tre culture adottino un atteggiamento di maggiore umiltà perché, come le tigri, gli squali e i falchi, ogni gruppo è potente nel suo territorio ma impotente nel territorio dell'altro.” Le tre culture è un'analisi dello stato della cultura molto opportuna per fare il punto anche sulla realtà accademica e sul dibattito culturale nell'Italia di oggi e di domani.In vista di una maggiore collaborazione tra discipline per risolvere i problemi e superare la crisi del nostro tempo.

Certo, la letteratura, cultura scritta, non è mai una sola e, forse, nemmeno è sempre letteratura: perché, prima di arrivare a un testo che qualcuno scrive, sono molte le fasi attraverso le quali quello che diventerà un testo sarà passato di voce in voce, di ambiente in ambiente. E nel continuo passaggio molti elementi possono modificare la storia di qualcosa o di qualcuno: per questo le cose non sono mai come sembrano, e anche per la cultura è così. I colori e le voci dell’Età di Mezzo emergono da un mare di lingue e di risonanze, di compunte preghiere e inarcate maledizioni. Nella vita, come nel Medioevo, niente è come sembra: in un continuo labirinto di direzioni sbagliate e vie giuste da trovare si muovono le tre culture: dotta, popolare e orale; si muovono fra tranelli e apparenze, generazioni e intelligenze. Un brulicare indimenticabile di certezze e di smarrimenti che riferisce come la cultura stia alla base di ogni cambiamento e ne tracci tutte le direzioni possibili.

In this book, Miguel Basáñez presents a provocative look at the impact of culture on global development. Drawing on data from governments, NGOs, the World Values Survey and more addressing over one hundred countries, he argues that values, as the "building blocks" of culture, are directly related to the speed with which social, cultural and economic development occurs. Basáñez utilizes quantitative survey data to delineate three cultural hyperclusters across the globe: cultures of honor, which prioritize political authority; cultures of achievement, which emphasize economic advancement; and cultures of joy, which focus on social interactions. According to Basáñez, these cultures evolved chronologically, mirroring the development of agrarian, industrial and service societies. He argues that a country's developmental path is profoundly influenced by its people's values and culture, as crystallized through its formal and informal governing institutions. Culture is passed down over generations through families, schools, the media, religious institutions, leadership, and the law. Although culture and values are in a permanent state of evolution, leaders and policymakers can also push cultural change in order to promote desirable goals such as economic growth, democratization, and equality. Over the course of the book, Basáñez introduces two new measures of development: the Objective Development Index (which blends rubrics such as health, education, income, gender equality, political rights and civil liberties, and economic inequality) and the Subjective Development Index (which uses responses to the World Values Survey to classify countries according to their values).
