In 1949, the photographer Lucien Hervé (1910–2007) took a picture of an innovative apartment building in Marseille, France, and sent it to the building's architect, Le Corbusier (1887–1965). Le Corbusier responded by asking Hervé to become his official photographer. This book recounts the creative collaboration between these two groundbreaking Modernists. The author takes the reader on a tour of sixteen of Le Corbusier's most iconic buildings using Hervé's edited sheets of contact prints as visual guides. These sheets, which became an effective tool in the collaborative dissemination of Le Corbusier's work, capture Hervé's dynamic perspectives and dramatic use of light. His sequencing of the individual prints creates an exhilarating rhythm that powerfully showcases the architect's novel forms and materials.

Lucien HervÃ(c) (b. 1910), one of the great architectural photographers of the twentieth century, collaborated with Le Corbusier from 1949 until the renowned architect died in 1965. HervÃ(c) approached his subjects seeking not only to document the buildings he was commissioned to photograph but also, especially, to convey a sense of space, texture, and structure. Through light and shadow, HervÃ(c) defined the dialogue between substance and form. By delineating a strong contrast between light and shadow as well as placing emphasis on building details, the photographer was able to communicate the depth of a room, the surface of a wall, or the strength of a building's framework. For too long, HervÃ(c) the master of architectural photography has eclipsed HervÃ(c) the photographer whose career began as early as 1938 and whose subject matter varied widely. Featuring more than one hundred of his photographs in every genre, this book celebrates HervÃ(c)'s work as an artist, creating images that serve not simply as records but stand as works of a singular imagination.

No other architect since Palladio has exercised such an immense influence as Le Corbusier. As with Einstein and Picasso, Le Corbusier made an impact that was felt within but also outside his special discipline. Through numerous buildings, urban projects, paintings, sculptures, drawings, and publications, he succeeded to develop a unique poetics of" machine "and "metaphor," revolutionizing the way people see, use, and make architecture. More than a modern architect, Le Corbusier was the "architect "of "modern life." The present monograph discusses Le Corbusier's oeuvre in a concise global manner in relation to the revolutionary developments of the century in which it was born. It shows how Le Corbusier worked within the context of new philosophical ideas; the avant-garde culture; the social, economic, and political movements; and new technology, achieving more than a delicate balance-- a synthesis. But it demonstrates also that Le Corbusier was a creator who conceived, enticed, and shaped many of these developments. As well as being "the" architect of the twentieth century, Le Corbusier is a prototype of human "creativity."
