EXTRAIT De la fenêtre de sa cuisine, elle aperçut un voisin qui traversait la cour intérieure de l’immeuble, escorté de son Yorkshire. En le voyant bâiller en jogging et chaussons, elle doutait que le monde pût appartenir à ceux qui se lèvent tôt, qu’ils soient tirés du lit par leur chien ou, comme elle, par leur stress. Elle s’était réveillée en pleine nuit, comme à chaque fois qu’elle était tenue par un horaire particulier ou un déplacement professionnel. Après avoir caressé un temps l’espoir de se rendormir, elle s’était levée de guerre lasse à 5 heures. Autant optimiser sa matinée. Debout devant le comptoir de la cuisine, elle inséra une capsule dans la machine à café et, tandis que le liquide chaud coulait dans une tasse minuscule, elle alluma son téléphone mobile. À la lecture des mails signalés comme urgents qui étaient arrivés dans la nuit, elle ressentit une vive brûlure à l’estomac. Elle mélangea aussitôt un sachet de poudre blanche à un peu d’eau, but la mixture en grimaçant, vida le fond du verre dans l’évier. La fenêtre étant située au-dessus de l‘évier, on ne pouvait échapper à la vue plongeante sur la salle de bain d’en face. Elle discerna, en ombre chinoise, la silhouette imposante de sa voisine assise sur les toilettes. Détournant la tête, elle passa machinalement une main sur le fin duvet châtain qui lui recouvrait le crâne comme si sa chevelure pouvait avoir repoussé pendant la nuit. La cuisine de sa mère étant trop petite pour y installer une table, il fallait traverser l’entrée pour se rendre dans le séjour si on voulait prendre son petit déjeuner assis, aussi il n’était pas rare qu’elle restât à boire son café debout, dans sa liquette en coton et ses grosses chaussettes. Ce faisant, elle consultait la messagerie professionnelle de son smartphone de manière compulsive, consciente que son stress s’en trouverait accru. Aucune réaction n’étant attendue de sa part à une heure aussi matinale, elle s’abstint de répondre afin de s’épargner une cascade de messages plus anxiogènes encore. Lorsqu’il s’agissait de manifester leur réactivité, ses collègues pouvaient se montrer particulièrement zélés. À PROPOS DE L'AUTEUR Raphaël Somal a grandi en Touraine puis en région parisienne. Passionné d'art, de cinéma et de littérature, il a été amené à travailler pendant de nombreuses années dans des entreprises très diverses où il a appris à observer ses contemporains et à s'en amuser. Ceci lui a inspiré son premier roman.

The setting for this study is reflected in the sub-title 'Merchant bankers and diplomats at work. ' The aim is to follow the partners in their many and diverse activities: in their relationship towards each other, in their contacts with other houses and in their attitudes towards government of ficials. Moreover, the author has attempted to show the motives for their commercial and financial actions, where these were discernible. A point of departure such as this implies that the surviving correspondence consti tutes the principal source of information. Quantitative data are included, but within this framework their role is subsidiary. Because this book is intended for various categories of readers, it has been divided into three parts. The introductory chapter, which contains an abridged history of Hope & Co. up to 1815, is intended for those whose interest in the subject is of a more general nature. In the same chapter, a number of main themes such as the growth of foreign loans in the Nether lands and the technique per se of issuing loans are discussed, and at tention is devoted to some of the problems of trade and to the question whether Hope & Co. should be viewed as merchants or as bankers. In conclusion, an impression is given of the part played by Amsterdam as a financial centre during the Napoleonic era and of the very exceptional po sition which Hope & Co. occupied at that time.
