Contrairement à la plupart des écoles de pensée sur le nationalisme, les auteurs adoptent comme thèse l’idée que la compétition des discours constitue l’axe essentiel des nations. Cette thèse repose sur les refus d’instaurer une césure entre des peuples ou des sociétés jugées traditionnelles ou modernes sans que des enjeux souvent peu visibles, et pourtant structurants, soient globalement considérés. Dans le contexte canadien, intégrer ces aspects dans la compréhension de la relation Canada britannique-Canada francophone amène à s’arrêter sur un discours, celui de la britannicité et de ses conséquences ( orientalisme, colonialisme ), et sur le modèle postcolonial lui-même et sa tendance à évacuer la question francophone.. C’est aussi, du point de vue de la francophonie, éviter toute prédiction déterministe par rapport à la francophonie hors Québec dans sa volonté de résister à une assimilation statistiquement annoncée, mais sans cesse ajournée. Enfin, c’est d’une part mieux saisir la complexité du Québec des années 1930 et, d’autre part, repenser le phénomène de l’immigration par rapport à une société canadienne-britannique qui, aujourd’hui encore, essaie de réduire le poids de la francophonie dans la sélection des immigrants.
