Holder of the chair of Egyptian religion at the Ecole pratique des hautes etudes, Section des Sciences religieuses, in Paris, from 1992 to 2015, Christiane Zivie-Coche left her mark on Egyptological studies in this field and trained several generations of Egyptologists. Also active in the field, from Louqsor to Tanis, via the Memphite area, she has published fundamental studies on subjects as varied as Giza in the second and first millennium B.C. or late Theban theologies, to name but a few. Former students, colleagues and friends - sometimes all three - Egyptologists, Hellenists, historians of religions, all wished to pay tribute here to the science of the recipient, and to her generosity, in research as in life. Focusing on Manet's A Bar at the Folies-Bergère, each contributor applies to it a different methodology, ranging from the more traditional to the newer, including feminism, Marxism, Lacanian psychoanalysis, and semiotics. By applying aspects of cognitive psychology to a study of three key tragic props, this book examines the importance of visual imagery in ancient Greek tragedy. The shield, the urn and the mask are props which serve as controls for investigating the connection between visual imagery and the spectators' intellectual experience of tragic drama. As vehicles for conceptual change the props point to a function of imagery in problem solving. Connections between the visual and the cognitive in tragedy, particularly through image shape and its potential for various meanings, add a new perspective to scholarship on the role of the visual in ancient performance. These connections also add weight to the importance of imagery in contemporary problem solving and creative thought.

La présente étude porte sur les traditions religieuses de la XVe province de Haute Égypte – la sepat de la Hase – dont la métropole était la ville égyptienne Khemenou, devenue l’Hermopolis Magna des Grecs. La notion de théologie hermopolitaine renvoie indirectement au dieu tutélaire de la métropole : Thot-Hermès. Hermopolis était en effet réputée en tant que lieu de culte principal de cette divinité. Le panthéon local se compose cependant d’autres figures divines dont le rôle, dans la mythologie propre à la province, mérite d’être précisé. Le cadre chronologique de ce travail couvre plus particulièrement la période courant de la XXXe dynastie jusqu’au deuxième siècle de notre ère. Outre la documentation locale, les textes issus des scriptoria des grands temples égyptiens ont été pris en compte en tant que sources complémentaires afin de permettre la reconstitution des mythes et des légendes associés aux lieux saints d’Hermopolis. En effet, la majorité des renseignements dont nous disposons ne sont pas d’origine locale, mais ont été filtrés par la théologie d’autres sanctuaires. Dans le cadre de la géographie cultuelle, les inscriptions géographiques et les rites d’offrandes des temples égyptiens s’avèrent ainsi une source privilégiée pour l’étude de la mythologie hermopolitaine. Cet ouvrage est organisé en trois parties. La première a pour objet la toponymie de la XVe province de Haute Égypte, la deuxième concerne la place de cette sepat dans la géographie sacrée et la dernière porte sur les divinités les plus importantes du panthéon local ainsi que sur les principaux thèmes mythologiques associés à Hermopolis.
